Just received a price of essentially $2k for the MMC Stage 1 kit (parts only), including intake, pipes...and an ECU flash that can only be performed by the factory.
Is this normal?
Firstly, I was under the impression that a Stage 1 does not require an ECU flash and secondly that the cost was more reasonable. Thoughts?

I'll recommend Garage 56 Stage 1... https://www.garage56.co.uk/product/stage-1-kit/Don't know what it does to warranty but it does sound sweet!

The Could the differences in price and specification be anything to do with quoting for a Euro 4 M3W maybe? Stage 1 kit didn't require an ECU flash as the adaptive maps can cope with it. The same applies for the G56 kit. Both benefit from an unlocked ECU and a rolling road set up though. I would vote for the G56 kit as well because I am a satisfied customer. Performance and running are greatly improved and it's got a deep rumble but is not too loud. If you plan any long journeys you will appreciate that after a few hundred miles.

I doubt the US dealer made a mistake by ordering for the wrong vehicle. I too thought the stock mapping could handle the increased air flow and didn't need a flash until Stage 2. I'm told the vehicles are tuned a bit lean for US DOT emissions standards....is it possible a remap is needed for US vehicles and not others?
I do plan to enjoy longer journeys. And because payload weight/distribution will vary quite a bit, I'm also looking at the Supplex shocks.

I've heard great things about this option. The Stage 2 looks like fun too! I'm curious if the calibration they refer to is DIY or requires a professional?

The factory takes the view that it will invalidate the warranty. Whether they’re legally entitled to take that approach is a different matter but, to avoid any aruments, I went with the factory Stage 1 kit. I have to say I love them. The noise is very loud but, after my first set of Stage 1 pipes failed within a couple of weeks of them being fitted as the weld went on one of them, I really missed the noise when I had the original pipes back put on until a repalcement set of Stage 1 pipes was fitted recently (under warranty). It was so good to get them back. The engine does run quite a bit more freely and, to my (slighly ringing) ears, the sound is great. Don’t underestimate the volume though. The G56 ones are definitely quite a bit quieter (with a more bassy sound).

I was a liitle (actually, very!) dubious about the volume of the factory Stage 1 pipes when I first had them fitted but, after doing 2,000+ miles with them on this year’s Gridelwald trip, I am sold on them. I have the Spax adjustable shocks on my car and I can’t say how they compare with the standard ones as mine were specced from new and already fitted when I took delivery of the car from the factory but what I can say is that the suspension set-up of my 2017 car is just so much better than the 2013 car I originally had. Red Leader has just recently had the same shocks fitted and I’m sure he would be happy to give his views on how he has found them.

+1 for the factory Stage 1 pipes. They are certainly loud when you're "getting on it" a bit, but I don't find them objectionable during part throttle cruise. And a helmet or at least ear plugs are recommended for long distance high-speed cruising anyway.
Additionally, they partially mask the noise of the bevel box and various rattles, so a double benefit :-)

I'm sure the factory pipes are fine, but some of the setups I've heard on M3Ws are frankly ludicrous. One came through Stroud last year, I have no idea who it was, but is was ear-splittingly loud, I'm surprised it didn't break any shop windows. From the comments people were making I don't think the locals were impressed.

Firstly, I was under the impression that a Stage 1 does not require an ECU flash and secondly that the cost was more reasonable. Thoughts? You are/were correct on both counts. The MMC stage 1 kit when it was available came out at a little under £1000. You got the silencer pipes and a complete S & S filter kit, both of which when fitted did not require an ECU upgrade. Suggest you speak to the parts department for an explanation, although it could be related to Euro 4 spec engines.
