Time for an update. The bell housing needed further modification to fit as having got Simon H to plate over the bit cut out to clear the chassis rail, I then realised that the flywheel would not fit. Doh!

So, it has now been re opened and a bit more taken off, plus I have welded the original piece of the forward facing mount back in. It now fits fine and there's decent clearance with the chassis rail.

However, there is not enough room for the concentric release bearing and the clutch assembly. This will mean that I will have to get about 15mm milled off the bearing mounting face so that it fits properly. Something I have since learned is quite common.

So having parked the bell housing issue, we then moved onto the scuttle roll bar. The bar is already bent to shape but needed to be cut to length with the correct angles ascertained.
A bit of wood was used as a template to get the correct angle of cut on the tube where it welds onto the base plate.

You would have had it with your edited link - but you have the "image" tags twice - you only need one [img] and one [/img]

So, just to finish off today's update. Having made a wooden template for the angle of the tube where it meets the base plate, we then cut the tube to the correct length and angle and voila!


The roll bar needed to be splayed out by 20mm to fit nicely on the base plates and door hinge plates and we did this using a big jack and a length of wood.

Now all I have to do is weld the tube to the base plate.

We also started to make up the rear gearbox mount out of billet. I'd bought a Cosworth mount and adapter plate but needed to pack it out a bit.

At last, a great and productive day in the garage!
Firstly, I remeasured (for the 3rd time) the flywheel, clutch, release bearing and crank face depth against the available room in the bell housing. Previously, it didn't seem that I had enough depth for everything and this would have made it necessary to mill the release bearing surface to gain more room. Something not quite right there as the bell housing is one of John Eales's premium products and he seemed confident nothing was wrong with it.

Anyway, Hurrah! having measured yet again I found the error of my method and realised I had incorrect calculations. At last, all was going to be well!

First job was to "lap" the flywheel to the crank face. Here's what both surfaces look like when that's done.



Having done that, flywheel and clutch can be mounted. Flywheel is lightened but by not outrageously so as I want a really nice drivers car. Flywheel is 9.6KG and clutch is AP racing organic.

An finally the gearbox bolted up. Phew!


Next job will be to finish the rear mount and then get the new propshaft cut to length.
