Many of you who have done the Albert Ball runs will have met my son Ashley, when we had our M3W. He has developed his own clothing range, concentrating on technical clothing for motorcycling. I am now going to give a blatant plug for something that he has developed which might be useful for hardened M3W drivers.

“The Orkney Baffle is designed to seal the gap between jacket and helmet (on a motor cycle). Made in England, the baffle features split panels at the front and back to ensure no draft cuts through and the lower section stays tucked in when riding. For the best thermal properties, we choose a Merino Wool - the hollow fibre allowing the yarn to trap and regulate heat.

To achieve a seamless construction for maximum comfort when worn under a helmet, we tracked down a very rare 1962, Wildt Mellor Bromley RTR twelve-inch circular knitting machine. Of the three thousand produced, only a handful are still at work. It took the best part of a year and numerous prototypes to fine-tune the stitch density, retention and panel construction.”

Good to see Ashley appears to be doing well.

Nice looking breeze blocker but unfortunately a bit too pricey for me.

Remember a dry but mid winter trip by motorbike from London to Dorset. Suitable layers of clothing topped by Irwin flying jacket.

The fur collar interfaced perfectly with my full face helmet making for relatively quiet and comfortable journey despite temperature dropping to near freezing. Repeated more recently with M3W. Jacket still like new despite being 30+ years old.

Oddly enough, I've got one of those Ashley Watson baffles on my Christmas list.. I tried on one of the Triumph motorcycles fleece neck tube the other day. Really comfy & bulky, with a simple black & white check outer, the only issue for me was the bottom still leaves a small gap where your tie would be if you wore one..

The AW baffle that I tried on has a napkin sized square that covers this area, so it scores a point there. It's pricey, though.. But still, if it works..

Looks a well made product...I have a similar item from biker days with large front and back "apron" but not merino wool...the best.

You have to ask yourself have you ever seen a sheep with a cold neck?

I still have a Tootal silk scarf that my first girlfriend bought me back in 1969 and it works remarkably well and still looks as good as it did back then.
It was warm enough back a few Januaries ago coming from Cambridge to Devon across Salisbury when it was -4 topless and no side screens. Warm as toast apart from my right elbow I did have a pair of gloves on though a great journey got home about 3 am.
There is something rather special about night journeys in the colder weather.

Especially if the moon is full and the sky clear. Somehow the moonlight adds a sharpness and driving an open car is just magical!

Yes it was exactly that, as you say somehow magical you just feel so alive and you feel as if you could drive forever.

This is why I LOVE driving without a roof all of the time but especially at night
