Use a Stanley craft knife to slit the belt along its axis. Fit the new belt beside the remains of the old one. Then remove the old belt completely and slide the new belt into position. This is not a recommendation on my part - just something I heard about - possibly on TM! Edd China.

Literally meaning ‘long may your chimney smoke’, this is the best way to wish someone a long and healthy life. You know a bit of Jockinese, Heinz.

So did Fuzz Townshend (car SOS) I would recommend a cambelt change every 5 years, regardless the milage. The cambelt on our Ford motorhome was 6 years old and had done only about 15k km and all the teeth came off. Result a few bent push rods. But no damage to the valves.

The S & S V twin in the M3W engine is zero interference even with optional higher lift cams. Probably just as well given the spate of crank timing pinion bolts unscrewing with early batch.
I wonder how many modern car engines are though?

a quote from the fordownersclub forum by a mechanic:
On the 1.4/1.6 Duratec (including the TI-VCT) Petrol engine the timing belt interval was changed by Ford from 100.000 Miles/10 Years to 100.000 Miles/8 Years.
The reason for this is that between 8 and 10 years many timing belts failed which resulted in major engine damage.

Hi guys, I need some help with the crankshaft torque setting after changing the timing belt. All the video's I've looked at on YouTube and also the Ford manual clip posted earlier in this thread (for the 2011 engine) state the torque should be 100Nm plus 90 a further deg's, BUT the Gates timing kit which i have used states 2 differnt torques depending on the bolt size?, For the 14mm bolt they suggest 40Nm plus 90 deg's where as the larger bolt (18mm I think) they say 100Nm plus 90 deg's. As Gates are good make, is it safe to assume they know what they are saying? If the bolt isn't tight enough the crank pulley could slip and the valves could hit te pistons....where as over tightening the bolt could snap and get stuck in my crankshaft. Does anyone know for sure which torgue to use on the 14mm bolt please? I'm hoping to get the job finished tomorrow. Thanks ps mine is a 2009 1.6 Sigma engine.
