The orange engine light on my 2007 roadster has just come on again. Last time it was code PO171 ( system lean bank 1 ) which was identified by a friend and switched off.
This time I would like to buy the correct code reader to do it myself. The engine is a Ford Mondeo 2967cc Duratec V6.

There are so many different ones on Ebay . My wife has an Apple Ipad .Could someone please identify on Ebay the actual item number of a suitable code reader preferably from a UK supplier

Ditto, bought this one a few months ago for just £4.49 delivered - click image link.

Worked out of the box with my Android tablet and free OBD Check Torque (Lite) app. This on Ford Cyclone engine but sure it would work with yours.

Does your car not have an OBDII socket Stuart?

If it does have one see above ^^^

If you want an OBD reader/reset unit then try Autel. I have a Maxiscan and it does everything I have needed. I believe Sealey May be UK agents.
Only issue with my older version is it is no longer supported for software upgrades. I managed one just before the stop but no more available. The newer ones will be ok and downloads easy via Autel.
If buying from eBay then take care to get one that is current and supported by Autel! There will be lots of unsupported older ones there!

Thanks for your replies.

Sorry to be thick Richard but if it is the multipin socket (a bit like a scart lead) under the middle of the dash near the power socket then yes.

Does the reader not have to be specific to a particular car type/engine or will any one do?

The image link I posted shows the 16 pin socket configuration. Yours should match indicating its compatible with the generic OBDII standard for engine on board diagnostics. The bluetooth dongle with matching app on phone or tablet should work once you have completed the one off pairing.

For Android devices there are many free apps to choose from on PlayStore. They should all be able to display fault codes and in most cases remove them.

ETA: Forgot to mention you may have to select on first use of chosen app, the vehicle make and sometimes model. I think in my case it was just Ford (generic).

OBD II readers are, as you suggest, a bit hit and miss - so yes, they need to be specific.

I had to buy 3 before I found one that would work with my +8. One of the rejected models worked with Jenks's 8, but didn't work on mine.

Amazon is your friend here - you can return ones that don't work.
