Hi Gents,

I've almost given up on finding a used 3 wheeler and started toying around with the idea of buying a new one. Since I am located outside the EU I can avoid the god awful look of the EU4 and order an EU3 - however I expect to keep the car for the rest of my (driving) life and hopefully take it back to my "doulce France" in the future. Will I be allowed to bring the car back to France with the EU3 specs ?

It is still possible to use EU3 vehicles in Europe, but some cities restrict higher-emission models (eg through the French Crit'Air scheme). An EU4 modified to function as an EU3 lookalike might fall foul because the EU Regulation requires the vehicle to maintain compliance for 20,000km.

You have the option to buy a eu4 mtw and to change it at the look of the eu3.This cost 2000 pounds i think.Garage Albert in Brussels explain that to me.

@M3W55 is it only restricted to a mileage limitation (20.000km) or is there an age waver ? (if the car is say more than 3 years old when i bring it back from abroad).

I run a Euro3 car (3 years old) and applied for a German clean air certificate - which is now required for many large German cities. I uploaded my documents and they sent me back a green Euro4 sticker. The reg document shows an L class but its taxed as an M due to its weight. So I now have a green Euro4 on a Euro3 car - perhaps they can't figure out what it is either

I am sure the Police would not know the difference, but in the UK a sharp-eyed MOT (annual roadworthiness check) tester might spot the non-compliance on a converted EU4. No doubt our continental owners will be able to tell you what the comparable test requirements are in the rest of the EU.

My (slightly shaky) understanding is that you wouldn’t be able to register an EU3 car in Europe. I guess what that would mean is that, if you were able to continue to use it in France on its current plates, that would be fine but, if you were to try to put French plates on it, you wouldn’t be able to nor would you be able to sell it to someone in the EU who wanted to register it in the EU.

Only a comment for MOG42 --> the green sticker does not mean EURO4, but only class 4 which get all cars with petrol engine and cat.
Only old Diesel cars do get only a yellow or red sticker with class 3 or 2, which does allow you to enter the cities.
But the 3W is homologated as motorcycle, so the green sticker is not necessary to enter the cities, only cars need the green sticker, motorcycles don't.

Appreciate the comment. It seems slightly confused as its weight means its taxed as a Car so I erred on the side of caution and got the sticker. According to their tables the green 4 is for Euro 4 cars only but I appreciate it might not even be a car! Never had a problem in any of Europe, but possibly because Im only visiting (?)

So in other words i'm better off either buying a used M3W pre-EU4 release if i want to take it back home with me?
