I don't disagree that slow drivers should pull over when there is an opportunity to do so to let traffic past. I would contend that a road in which it is impossible to overtake safely anywhere is probably not capable of supporting traffic moving at 50-60mph.

I suspect what might have been actually happening here was an example of what is to my mind the worst form of driving, where someone drives very slowly though bendy bits, but then speeds up when the road straightens out, preventing people from overtaking.

I have no problem whatsoever with people driving slowly, there may be a million reasons why it's the right speed for them, but this 25mph through the bends/50mph on the straights nonsense is extremely frustrating.


One reason why the Plus 8 is so rewarding, it is easy to overtake the typical modern driver who proceeds at 45mph on a 50 mph limit that was, until last year, a "national limit" road.
The only problem with "ballistic" overtaking, motorcycle style, is that it frightens the driver of the car being overtaken as it seems these people don't use their mirrors, so have no idea that I'm there.
I now mostly drive with headlights on and flash main beam before overtaking....


I have often found that I have held up traffic when in the Morgan and whilst travelling at the designated speed limit (not below at least! )for a particular stretch of road. The mirror is full of those jostling to overtake each other so according to these posts one should just pull over and let them overtake at way above the designated speed limit?

Why not? It doesn't do you any harm and it might allow them to crash earlier.

I don’t think anybody is suggesting a slower driver or even a driver at the speed limit should pull over, all that’s required is a bit of courtesy and consideration. If I’m slower in the corners, at the next overtaking opportunity, I make it easy for the following car to pass. I don’t nail it up to the limit, I don’t cut the corner or drive in the middle of the road, seconds later, I have the whole place to myself again, far more enjoyable than getting wound up and deliberately annoying other people.

Well nearly, I sometimes find it hard to take my own advice, it’s easy being nice to nice people, to be truly nice, you have to be nice to even the rudest drivers. laugh2

And when I do let you past; don’t cut back in 12” past my car and splatter me with grit. Why does that even happen on a dueller? banghead

There are several good rules in the US that I would like to see considered in the UK.

The undertaking rules seems to becoming more applicable in the heavily traffic south.

The turn-on-red associated with a new filter symbol on the lights for specific junctions.

I think I heard that when you have a queue of more than three cars behind you and you are not observing the road speed you should pull over and let them pass when its clear to. This is intended for the tourist and back roads mainly as it was explained to me.


Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

And the Midlands, or indeed anywhere near any cities, it seems.

I don't stray out of Gloucestershire much except when I'm on holiday, and I am truly staggered just how busy the roads are in urban areas. In Stroud, the rush hour doesn't even last for the full hour really. The B roads are blissfully quiet and you can get most places without ever having to deal with heavy congestion.

So I guess our attitudes to driving and the behaviour of other drivers is heavily shaped by the conditions in which we find ourselves.

Odd really. Doesnt matter whether I read good driving posts in a car forum or a boat one or a bike one ( yes I am a sad barsteward haunting 3 different forums blush ) I only ever read posts by good nay perfect drivers. I seem to be the only average mistake making driver around. The only one who doesnt always indicate, sometimes drives too close, does only 45 in a 50 limit, been known to hogg the middle lane etc.

I shall have to improve!

I like to think of myself as a good driver, but not all the time! If I’m in the zone on a decent road with little traffic I’m switched on and driving well ( in my opinion that is!) but I know I can lapse into bad habits at times, too close, not always indicating when I overtake etc.

I tend to speed on motorways but generally stick to limits elsewhere and particularly in built up areas. But sometimes I’m quite happy to meander along below the speed limit unless there are cars behind me. Of course I drive a 4x4 so many would consider me a poor driver 🙄

One thing to remember is that we are a group of people who take an interest in cars and in driving. We may not all drive perfectly all the time, but we take driving much more seriously than the majority of drivers.

The vast majority of cars on the roads are driven by people for whom their car is just transport. They have no real interest in either the car (other than what its badge says about them) or in driving.
