Genevieve, the 1953 film about two friends completing on the London to Brighton rally, has been showing on Sky channels recently. Great film with loads of period road shots of London at that time.
I've always liked that film too, although Kenneth Moore (Ambrose Claverhouse)'s Spyker is actually a 1905 model, so wouldn't have been eligible......
One of my favourites, but not B & W, is The Fast Lady. Made at Beaconsfield Studios in 1962 where I lived as a nipper so lots of scenes were familiar, 1927 red label Bentley was one of the stars.
For mid 50s sports cars, the film 'Checkpoint' is pretty good. For those not familiar with it, the film has a thin, thriller plot but the 'documentary' footage centres around a motor race, believed to be the 1955 Mille Miglia. Typical British cast of James Robertson Justice, Anthony Steel, Stanley Baker etc. Weakish plot but the stars are the cars and the Italian scenery with the focus on a team driving Aston Martin DB3s.

Has anybody else noticed that "period" films made recently all seem to feature spotless period cars. Totally unrealistic, clearly supplied by fastidious owners. Shame we don't see many oily rag jobs
I’ve met a few classic car owners that regularly lend their cars out to film companies for period work - there are agencies that specialise in this sort of thing
It’s quite good money and the owners get to stay on set and sometimes drive their cars although a few have said when you’ve done it once it gets a bit boring with a lot of waiting around

. There could be a nice little sideline there, Get paid to throw buckets of dirty water over them as they drive on the set.
