Looking for some help please! I am trying to find out the do's & don'ts when towing a 1922 M3W Grand Prix on an unbraked two wheel trailer to Montlhery in May. At this point, I am assuming the weight of the trailer & M3W will be less than 750kgs & therefore less than 50% of the weight of the towing vehicle, (weights will be confirmed shortly!) so am assuming it's all legal, if anyone has another view, it would be welcome! I am having difficulty in confirming respective speed limits for the peage, 'A' & 'N' roads respectively for this combination, & what other 'legal requirements' that should be taken into account when towing in France.

90kph on autoroutes, 80kph when the limit without trailer is 110 and 80kph on other roads where the limit is 80 or 90. You are required to have a carte grise (registration document) for a trailer weighing more than 500kg.

You probably do not need the registration document as there is no equivalent in the UK (but Brexit may cause problems!). There is no EU agreement on registration of light trailers - it's just the French who require it.
Do you know anyone else who towing a vehicle to Montlhery? Or do you belong to a club that has experience of these things?

If you are a member of the AA/RAC they offer guidance and advice telephone services?

Myself and friends have towed trailers loaded with offroad competition car & quad bike to compete in Tout Terrain championship in France with no problems.
Be careful using Portsmouth to Caen route - as we had a dodgy experience with illegals jumping on the trailers as we approached the ferry port in Caen - not a nice experience when your confronted with 100 people trying to stop you.

Thanks for the replies; have checked with AA; still not totally certain of the exact requirements regarding weights etc, speed limits now clear, using the shuttle so not anticipating problems. Next step, 3 wheeler club!

Peter Can I suggest a phone call to the friendly folk at The Automobile magazine? They were at the last Montlhery Revival and towed a car down.
Also the VSCC may give you pointers as again many of their members were in attendance.

You are required to have a carte grise (registration document) for a trailer weighing more than 500kg. I was looking this exact thing up recently (speeds in FR) and oddly found that there is no different legal limit unless you are over 3500kg total train, when it is 90kph as you say. The Autoroute website 'suggests' 90 when towing but thats it. If you could point us at the source of info that would be very helpful.
