As far as I know any EU plastic licence is OK in Italy. The older UK paper licence (if any still exist) may not be.

As far as I know any EU plastic licence is OK in Italy. The older UK paper licence (if any still exist) may not be. There are lots of the old paper licences still around. When I presented mine for a van hire recently I was told around half their customers still had them. They don't expire so if you haven't moved house there is no need to change. I'm interested to read about the International Driving Permit though. I'm off to New Zealand later this month and according to the website I'll need an IDP there. How long has this requirement been in place? I've driven in many countries around the world, including the U.S.A. and Australia, but only ever carried my UK licence before.

You have to re-apply for you driving licence when you reach 70 years-of-age. You have to surrender your paper licence.
However I understand it is increasingly more difficult to hire a car when you reach a certain age. Have any TMers had any problems?

Yes John, Most of the multinational companies have no age limit to drive a car BUT they do expect you to be fit to drive, and they may charge an "additional fee" for "extra insurance" The smaller regional/national companies are rather more picky and although I have not personally found too many issues yet, it does look like it is something that is going to be more tricky as anno domini marches on. Where I have really big problems is hiring vans. I take a large panel van to Slovenia each year for a kayaking trip, and this year I have only found one local company who will accept me as a septuagenerian driver. Even the large multinationals appear to draw the line at 70

I can't speak for the Antipodes but going back to the early 1970's when we worked in South Africa for a few years we needed to get an International Drivers License. In those days we did it through the AA here and renewal was done out there in Cape Town (AA) so it goes back a while. It was needed to get insurance cover on all the company vehicles as well as for showing to the local polis if requested.

I have only once taken out an international licence and nobody ever wanted to see it so I never bothered after that. In China we had to apply for a Chinese driving licence even though we were only there for two weeks (on Chinese registered MZ 250 motorcycles) we had to surrender the licences at the end of the trip despite originally being told that we would be able to keep them as a souvenir. One of our group of 6 refused to surrender his and told them he had lost it. He probably now has a lifetime ban on riding in China

Got an international licence in case requested in France last year, made me feel more confident but was a waste of time , as all the cops must have been on holiday for summer, pretty sure NZ/ England have a reciprocal deal on licences as friends always drive here on their Uk ones as I drive over there on my Kiwi one . The rental car companies have no problem with it.
