Got one for the Merc. but can’t get one for the Mog as it’s a ‘96 and they only issue them for ‘97 on. That means I won’t be able to drive in Paris during the daytime (though I probably wouldn’t want to)

I have them for the Morgan and the Jaguar. Costs very little if you apply for it via the official site and saves the possibility of any agro.

I was in NZ a couple of years ago and didn’t have a IDL and hired a car no problem when I was out there. I’m pretty sure when my son moved out there he drove on his UK licence for the first couple of years until he wanted class 2 HGV

Got an international licence in case requested in France last year, made me feel more confident but was a waste of time , as all the cops must have been on holiday for summer, pretty sure NZ/ England have a reciprocal deal on licences as friends always drive here on their Uk ones as I drive over there on my Kiwi one . The rental car companies have no problem with it. Driven loads of times on my UK licence in NZ never had an issue, maybe different if one was to take up residence though?

I always carry an International licence as I drive in many countries that don’t recognise the UK Licence. When I renewed mine just before Xmas before leaving the UK last month for Cambodia and Laos plus NZ I enquired about the 1968 and was told at the PO they had no knowledge of it.

It seems to say you need one whichever country you put in. Thanks everyone for the comments about NZ. As tmg513 says, the tool on the Post Office website claims you'll need an IDP whatever country you enter. The caveat is further down the page: " ... ask the [rental] company concerned to confirm the driving licence requirements of the countries you’re visiting. Without this info, consider an IDP as a precautionary measure." Wikitravel says: " You can rent a car in New Zealand if: You're over 21 years old and the holder of a valid international drivers' licence or a current local licence. Drivers with a full driving licence can drive for 12 months from the date of arrival". It seems to me the IDP is like the passport checking service, another Post Office money-making venture. ~ian

I can't speak for the Antipodes but going back to the early 1970's when we worked in South Africa for a few years we needed to get an International Drivers License. In those days we did it through the AA here and renewal was done out there in Cape Town (AA) so it goes back a while. That sparked a memory, I recall the AA doing them when I was a member years ago. Out of interest, I just searched around to see when the AA stopped being the issuer and found out it was two days ago! "The way you apply for an IDP has changed – we can't issue any IDPs at all (including by post or at our Folkestone/Eurotunnel shop) after 31 January 2019." www.theaa.com/driving-advice/driving-abroad/idp

How strange, I obtained my international Driving Licence, from the Post Office, last week. 5.50 UKpounds for the licence and 5 UKpounds for the photos.
What surprised me was that the ink stamps that the cashier used had “AA” on them.

I’ve just bought my IDP from the local Post Office.
The very helpful lady who issued the permit advised me that their branch only had 4 blanks left after mine, further supplies being on “order”!
Call me over cautious, but I’m glad I’ve obtained mine in good time for a pending trip to France.
