After 4 years of an occasional click and failing to start it has failed completely.Battery checked o.k. but would only start if using jump leads, which made me think starter o.k. and get a new battery.I have fitted a new battery but it still fails to start.Any help and idea`s would be appreciated.

Can you damage the battery conditioner or battery by trying to start the car with it plugged in.

The first item that I would check are the earthing connections. Poor earth's account for many a woe with regard to battery and starting problems. even if the battery is fully charged, it will still click if the earth is poor.

If you are doing nothing, how do you know when you are finished?

This is a well known issue... The starter needs replacing.

The starter needs nearly 100% of the cranking amps when new to turn the engine over... as time goes by this increases due to dry joints etc.
Eventually leading to the click and no start.

To clean up the starter it is a significant amount of work and by the time you have invested at getting to it the replacement part is a minor addition. Cleaning up only lasts for a while and you are back to square 1 anyhow.
