After seeing a few Morgan's recently with Silver/Black plates it got me wondering.. do many members on here have them?
I agree they look great and suit the older looks of the cars, however all of the ones I have seen have been on post 75 vehicles (I think 75 is the cutoff date) so technically not legal.
Just curious on peoples thoughts?

When this has been raised in the past I think the consensus was that most keep the "correct" set of plates in the car and if requested by the polis swap them over, I can't recall anybody having to carry that out though.

In Wiltshire the Police are more concerned that the plates can be read by cameras than strict legal compliance. So if you have a 3 letter/3 number plate on a Mog it is unlikely they will care, but if you have a more recent plate in Black and silver they will.

I think the modern style plates in black and silver look really naff.

Which leads me to ask, is the rear number plate on my 4/4 legal? It is a 1982 model and has the aluminium bumpers fitted. The rear bumper overhangs the number plate bracket by quite a distance which obliterates any clear view of the plate unless viewed from distance. I have noted that unmodified Morgans of the same era with bumpers fitted have the same indistinct rear plate. So it left the factory like this, but does it mean that it passes the present day legal requirements

I've had black and silver on mine from virtually the beginning. Current prefix style, I have had them mentioned once or twice but never any legal issue, so far purely on the plates. They are recognised by speed cameras, however it appears some traffic system cameras cannot for example the Dartford crossing. Although the car is registered on their system via work.

The reflective plates are also a safety feature. Given the low profile of a Mog & the idiots driving out there I am keeping mine.

The present day legal requirements don't apply to your 1982 car Owen. No doubt Keith will correct me, but so long as your plate can be read from a distance of IIRC 25 feet, your car is legal (on reflective yellow rear plate). A Google search will probably reveal the required distance. My '93 has the lower plate.

I ran black and silver old registration number plates on my Roadster. Only had one comment from the police. Apologised and told them I’d forgotten to swop them after a show.....not sure they believed me! I did keep modern plates under the drivers seats. They looked good on an all black car but the issue of a black car at night, low and with not the most effective rear lights did make me wonder about lack of visibility of the car!
And now I have white painted figures on maroon and painted on the sides of the tail! No idea if it’s strictly legal!
