It's that time for me to remove the front wings so that I can check out the rust etc on the inner wings. Has anyone got any tips for doing this. It has been checked before - about 10 years ago! This was carried out by Darren at New Elms. Looking at the book, diagrams online it seems petty straight forward.

I would definitely recommend removing and replacing each fastener in turn before you attempt wing removal. You may well find that some are corroded, especially those that go up underneath the body tub. If you end up having to grind the tops off and drill new holes adjacent so you can put new screws in, it's an awful lot easier if the wing is securely held in its original position.

I might be missing something here but why do you need to take the wings off to check the inner wings?

After chiseling/drilling out numerous fasteners to remove the wings from my 4/4 for the first time I replaced them with stainless steel when I did the reinstallation, making the operation much easier for the next removal.

Yup, me too. I used button-head M4 hex capscrews, smeared with Copaslip and with stainless nylocs. much easier to remove/replace and I think they look reasonably smart.

Arwyn It's my understanding that to check on the inner wings you have to remove them. This is due to water over the years making its way from the wing down the gap between the wing and bulkhead. I have used sealant to stop the progress of the water. I have a very good picture on my desktop at work which I will download, as a picture tells a thousand words!
