The post 97 long door cars have significant improvements.

So if you can stretch to this it's worth doing.

And they are easier to get into!

Should be able to get a good one for around £23,000 if you're patient.

Yes I agree

£23,000 with a private sale I’m sure could be achievable with a bit of time and searching

Cuprinol treatment of the ash frame was standard from 1986 IIRC. It was optional for a few years before - our first Morgan was from 1985 and the original build sheet showed that Cuprinol had been applied at extra cost.

I don’t know when it became standard to remove the wings before painting the car. Again, our 1985 car had wing beading fitted - which was optional and ensured that the wings were removed for painting. Any car without wing beading, of any vintage, could have been painted with the wings on - which leads to corrosion issues.

Currrent traditional cars (4/4, +4, Roadster) are all the same width inside whereas earlier cars varied in width which may be a factor for you to consider.

As others have written above, buy on condition. Look at several cars and the right one will choose you.

Welcome to TM and good luck with your quest.

Hi tlg,

There is a breakfast meet at your local dealer Krazy Horse in Bury St.Edmunds on Thursday March 7th. Organised by FolkMog, the local branch of the MSCC, I'm sure you would receive a warm welcome and have all your questions answered by both owners and professionals. You will get to see most models as well both used and new. Starts at 0930.

It's the getting out again that's more problematic! grin2

The ash frame has been dipped in preservative since mid-80s. Join MSCC, go to local meets and ask questions. There will always be someone who has experience of slightly earlier cars, who would probably assist in pointing out where the failings can be and how to spot them. Most owners will be happy to show you around their car smile

Although he’s far too modest to promote it, Dave W’s book “Buying and Maintaining a Modern Traditional Morgan” is an absolute mine of information. I think it’s a must read for any potential Morganeer.

Good luck with the hunt.

I have an '89 +4 2-seater M16 which I bought 4 years ago. Like you I was limited to a budget and started looking at 4/4's because that was all I thought I could afford. I tried several 4/4's of the era (mid/late 80's) but they were 1600's and I found them underpowered. The +4 was/is a different ball game, much more gutsy.

Many people on this site have more modern 4/4's which have 1800 engines and are therefore faster than the 80's versions, unless they've been tweaked a lot.

My suggestion would be to try as many as you can of both the 4/4 and +4's, but of the era you can afford. I found my car on the Car and Classic website and found all the dealers I dealt with very helpful. Try the Car Locator site on Morgan's web site - it has a full range of what is in their dealers. Just enter your top budget and see what cars are available.

I'm in North Essex near Harwich - if you're down this way send me an email and I'll give you a drive out.

Geoff

Thanks Richard, unfortunately I'm away that week. Do these happen regularly or is it a one off?

The breakfast meets aren't that often. Allon White also does them but is a bit further away.

I used to own one of the last short door T16 powered +4s. Now I have a Roadster. The long door cars are better built e metal work all ali if you are lucky.

I used the Morgan website to do a search for cars between 15k and 25k. Unfortunately it didn't pick up the one at £11k!! Dry stored for 7 years and needed recommissioning with a bit of TLC to the bodywork. It had just gone when I enquired. My current classic had been stored for 16 years and needed the whole car going over so recommissioning is not an unfamiliar task. Guess I'll, have to wait a couple of years before something similar come up!
