I wasn't after spectacular mpg but did want a 4/4 and bought a Duratec model, 2007, after advice from various Morgan sources.I got lots of 'extras' for the same price as a new Sport which was a bonus.
It does well on M ways, keeping up well in the BMW lane. I easily drop to 36mpg if I hammer it but 40+ is no prob and when touring I got 50mpg which was a pleasant surprise as I wasn't trying to achieve that:)

Hello Moss, Welcome to the wonderful world of "Moggie Worship" I am awaiting delivery of my second +4 and from previous experience, if you don't hammer the living daylights out of the car, the fuel consumption is miserly. From full to full, I managed 48mpg from my last car so 40mpg is very easy to sustain. With regard to "what to purchase", don't be decieved by the new price of a "basic" car. You will find that the bits that make a Moggie such a delight can easily add £7 to £8K therefore a top spec pre loved car can make a lot of sense.

Start by looking at the options list and pick the options you would like to have. Price them up. Things like the full tonneau and sidescreen bag are quite expensive for example.
That will provide a starting point. Then consider your "must haves" on any used car. For me that was a dark interior, folding/reclining sports seats, stainless wires and easy up hood.
Then start looking with your "must haves" in mind. When you view the right car you will know immediately.
It's a buzz like no other.

Hi Moss...welcome from another new boy! I'm still pondering over a 4/4 or Plus 4. I'm currently running a Z3 2.2 Sport and will be quite happy with similar performance but it would be great to improve on fuel consumption...the Zed is a thirsty beast!

I'm still trying to find my way around the models, had a factory tour a couple of weeks ago which was brilliant and I'm back there later this week to see a car a friend had bought before we pick it up at the end of the month and will do another tour.

One thing I'm confused over is the Easyup Hood, does that suggest that the original hood is not easy to put up? I see the 4/4 Sport still uses the older hood so I'm confused!

Once again thanks for the encouragement. I'm taking all this information in and now I'm quite pleased at the prospect of fuel etc. My usual trips to the continent were around 6,000 miles per holiday and my fear would have been as much about 'tank range' as expense. You have dispelled that worry for me. With most thirsty cars you tend to be on 'forecourt' too often. Initially when I started continental journeys there wasn't any fuel after 8pm. If you ran out .. then you had a problem. That's changed a bit, but not completely. Head even a short distance off the beaten track and it's very quiet out there. (Which is what keeps me going back)Automated pumps aren't always working and can't always be easily found.

Great advice to look at the options list. I'll actually do that this evening. I'm fairly sure I'll end up with a previously owned car as that whole science seems to me to be the smart choice. I can imagine that a lot of the stuff isn't included in the sale .. which brings me to a couple of questions.

1. Is there any storage space behind the seats of a 2 seater? All the photos online seem to stop short of actually showing any detail in this area.

2. Is some sort of hood included in a 'new' sale? Lots of the new cars are photographed without hoods fitted. Unless they are hidden somewhere.

3. Is there a fitting kit for carrying a spare wheel? I notice a circular indentation on the rear panel but I'm wondering if there needs to be a kit for the inside etc. The wheel on the rear looks class. Love that look.

Our Morgan dealership here (Belfast dealership) has more or less closed and there is no stock to go and examine. Does anyone know of anywhere else here (N. Ireland) where one could see Morgans?

1) yes there is, there is room for two holdalls, I would upload a photo but I'm having problems with this at the moment.

2) All cars have a hood, vinyl as standard, upgradeable to mohair.

3) The sport models do not have a spare wheel, a spare wheel and luggage rack holder is available but to my eyes is a bit ungainly. If touring is the aim, then I reckon that a non sport model is a better bet, the non-sports also normally have the faster erecting "new" style hood.

The older style of hood, that was standard for 50 years (such as on my 1989 4/4 4 seater) is simliar to a Scout's ridge tent. Hood supports that fold forward, then lay the hood on top, and pop the edges of the hood into place. The Easyup/quickfit/simmonds hoods are a similar design to your Z3.

I suggest you visit your local Morgan Dealer or Morgan owners group. Let the forum know where your are and we can advise.

BTW the models numbers may be confusing e.g. My 4/4 has a Ford 1.6 CVH, a new 4/4 would have a Ford 1.8 but with different chassis dimensions. 4/4 = 1.6 - 1.8 L, +4 = 2.0 L, roaster 3.0 L, +8 = 3.5 - 4.5 L.

Thanks Steve. I went back to the factory today to see my friends car (looks lovely in Aston Martin Green metallic) and had the two types of roof demonstrated to me.

I know the Easyup is a lot quicker and more convenient but I prefer the older style hood in that it tucks away a lot better and I don't plan to run with a hood up much anyway!

Having had both styles (though not the factory easy-up hood) I prefer the orginal.

OK, it does take quite some time (and effort with mine since it shrank slighly after reproofing the mohair!), but when it's down (or off) it's out of the way, either on the rear rack or on the parcel shelf behind the seats.

With the easy-up (on a +4), it did as it says in the description, but when folded down it reduced the carrying space behind the seats and also, if not rolled/folded very carefully could affect operation of the inertia reel belts (my '76 has static belts).

If there's a good chance of it being a wet, wet day, I put the hood up in the garage before going out, leaving the sidescreens off until needed becasue the rain is coming in sideways!
