My tyres aren't quite as old but d-day approaches in the not too distant future hence my interest. I hadn't looked at Avons because I had just assumed that they were one of the more specialist performance tyres and expensive to boot. Must have been a distant recollection I guess.

Umm, but a dinghy is designed to float on water?
I have ZV7 (might be ZT7?) on the back of the MINI, seem a little better than the Firestones that were moved to the front when I ditched the cheapo Chinese ones that came on the car.
Had Toyo T1R Proxes on the +4 (but they were a slightly smaller diameter than standard tyres - fitted by previous owner) - no problem with them rain or shine.
Happy with the Vredestein TTrac on the 4/4.

I have Michelin Pilot Sport 4S on the Plus 8: a big improvement on the Avon ZZ3 tyres it came with.

The Roadster had Avon ZZ3 as well, I'd probably have gone for Avons again, but they don't do either the ZZ5 or ZV7 in the correct sizes for the front fitting on the Plus 8.

Well I priced up the ZV5’s about 5 years ago on my 4/4 and to seem to remember them being very expensive

I’m getting the ZV7’s fitted balanced etc for £60 each which seems very good to me

The Michelin Pilot Sports get all the plaudits in the motoring press and if they were a bit cheaper I think I might have gone with those but it’s hard to know how biased those reviews are as Michelin spend a fortune on advertising

My last Audi RS6+ had Conti on arrival - replaced with MPSS and significant improvement.

Current Aero S2 had 4 year old Vredestein Ultrac which were recently replaced with MPSS and had a VAST improvement.

I always hate paying the extra and won't do it for the lorry which spends most of its time on Motorways and in town being driven at 50%. I still buy quality branded tyres but not the whole hog for Michelins.

I will pay when I know I m going to use the performance in them. Not to say other tyres would be within XX% and that's the bug bear as you say. Do I need and am I willing to pay for the final XX%.

I’ve realised it’s extremely hard to extract the actual differences on tyres and cut through the marketing and the biased reviews but if the Michelin’s had been a similar price to the Avons I might have given them a go

A Mog weighing in at a metric tonne with no ABS or traction control etc is a bit different to a performance saloon so not only is it difficult to compare tyres on the same vehicle, you’ve also got the difference in weight and vehicle type

I don’t think there is any right or wrong answer or if there is it would take a genius and months of testing to work it all out

The one saving grace is that performance tyres are now of a high quality from every major manufacturer so if you make a duff call, they still keep you on the road and you can change them after a couple of years

My 1980 +8 runs 15 inch rims, ditched the 14 inch rims 20 years ago. Runs Toyo Proxes CF2 - 70% worn and 5 years old.

Not available in 15 ins: MPSS, Toyo Proxes, Yoko Advan and Conti Sport 6.

Those rated A in the rain and available are the: Avon ZV7s, Conti Premiunm 5, Dunlop Sport Blue and Bridgestone Turanza T005.

Anyone know anything about the Bridgestone Turanza T005?

As a thought, Lotus uses the Yokohama AD07 or AD08 Advans an the Elise... car is a similar weight but is able to exploit and press the tyre limits more. So that would say a lot I would have thought... if they are available in the appropriate sizes?

I have a 2007 Elise with good power and AD08R. A very good tyre. Recommended if it would be offered in the needed size of the car in question.
