A matter close to the hearts of all Morgan enthusiasts. There was a pretty gloomy piece on ash dieback in the uk on the today programme this morning, which seemed to say that the impact was proving to be worse than had at first been predicted. I can’t find a link to them at part of the programme alone. Did any of you chaps hear it ?

Morgan has plenty of stock of ash at the moment from its Lincolnshire supplier. But does it need it? The new alloy chassis cars don’t really need a wood frame...it’s a bit of a sales gimick really. All part of the Morgan “wood, alloy and leather” thing. That should be in the past, composites or formed alloy structures would be far more accurate and allow for increased production more efficiently.
I’ll hide now!

Most upholstered furniture has a wood frame. I suppose it's easier to work than metal and woodworking skills are easier to master.

I’ll hide now! That was exactly what I thought after a few moments of being pleased that a bit of ash frame had been retained in the Plus Six. Of course, if ash is not used in future Morgans, the company's remaining stock can be sold off. Very good for flooring, as is well known...

Most upholstered furniture has a wood frame. I suppose it's easier to work than metal and woodworking skills are easier to master. Yes but the panel beating that goes with it is very specialist. At the end of the day the ash frame is probably the bit that makes Morgans unique because it is central to the process of panel beating and therefore the individuality of each car. Once this is removed from the process and replaced with a precision moulded or assembled frame, the need for panel beating goes with it, to be replaced with the supply and assembly of pre-formed panels.

Yes but thats the part that makes it necessary to hand produce, it means that parts arent interchangeable in the way they should be, and it limits volumes. I reckon you will find that the new Italians owners do something about the old factory methods and gross inefficiencies.

However I would only see the traditional methods defined as inefficient if the intention was to increase output significantly.
