From near Exeter our obvious choice is to get there via Plymouth Brittany Ferries. Now you may think this is a silly suggestion for you nearer Calais. Cost-wise it may not make sence. There has never been any problem with ramps on or off Brittany Ferries. The West coast route down through France is less busy and avoids Lyon. (I hit a chunk of wood that had fallen from a truck and damaged the undertray of my VW Passat down that way!).
If your heading for the South West of France I would give it some thought but if your heading for the South East then I suggest the scenic way down Route Napoleon if you are not in too much hurry. Newhaven / Dieppe ferry might avoid congestion at Calais - It is was one of the no frills cheap and cheerful operaters.

I have been going through the tunnel in my +8 for many years now and never had an issue .
I find it much more tricky negotiating the loading ramps on some ferries, the tunnel is much easier in that respect.

Hi, I am planning a trip to the South Of France in May and usually take the train to cross the channel as its quick and easy, I usually go on my Motorcycle.
This year we are thinking of going in the Morgan for a change and I was wondering if anyone has had experience of boarding and ground clearance using the ramp on the side of train?
I've never given it much thought in all the times I've been as I just ride on and get on with it, but the Morgan being so low has got me thinking now.
Anyone got any experience or advice on using the train? I've seen much lower cars than yours getting on the tunnel en route to Le Mans without any problem.

The early Roadsters are reputed to have the lowest ground clearance of any Mog, but we've never had a problem on the Tunnel with ours
Except last year when we arrived in France the brand new Range Rooney in front 'failed to proceed' after quite a long wait one of the attendants advised that we should reverse the full three carriage length, and get off quickly, unless we wanted to end up back in Blighty

Yes, I've been doing it for years with no problem at all, They always put low-slung cars on the bottom deck anyway.

Ok for +8 and Aero. Sanef is now Emovis in UK and worth every penny for convenience and look of astonishment on face of the French driver behind.

No problems with my +8 1980 on the train. And a french sourced SANEF tag, used for several years. Now available for Spain and Portugal.

Without a doubt, the train is convenient and speedy however, the ferry feels more like a foreign trip as you stand at the stern watching the white cliffs fade into the mist then see the coast of France coming into view.
Here for a good time not a long time!!

joking aside, you are correct that the ferry makes it more of a special event,
downside you waste an hour but upside you can relax and enjoy the break.
