When Dan at KH set my car up on the rolling road, my standard MMC ECU was not locked.
You were lucky (and I know of another car where this was the case) I checked mine before upgrading the cams and it was locked. It's easy to check with the Protune software which will tell you if the ECU is locked when you connect it up.

The only way I could figure out was to buy a new ecu. S&S and Garage56 sell the ecu for around $800. The nice thing about going with garage 56 is they will put their maps on it.
For me the remapped ecu and the new cams transformed the engine so that it pulls hard from 2k up through the redline.

Very easy if you're MMC and have the unlock code. Virtually impossible if you're anyone else.

G56 told me that S & S are bringing out a new ECU later this year. They currently don't have any in stock.

One can see why MMC would want to restrict access to the ECU key - there could be significant warranty issues if anyone was free to tinker with it.
My machine was recently at the factory for work that included a reflash, so as the ECU was going to be unlocked anyway I took the opportunity to save £800 on a new box and have a bit of power added.

Hi John, I'd been looking at the older one  This is part of the optional Euro 3 "appearance" mods to a Euro 4 car and would be done by MMC. It'll still be a locked ECU. It's also worth noting that the wiring loom is different for EU3 and EU4 cars so if anyone has an Eu4 and wanted to go down the unlocked ECU route then they will need to check the configuration of the replacement ECU. I believe the Euro 4 cars come with an OBD port rather than the old micro USB port on the ECU.
