The AMG C43 has speed limit recognition based on GPS data and reading the signs.
On A Roads it is reasonably accurate, but fails frequently in rural and urban areas.
On the car it just flashes the sign for a few seconds so can be ignored.

IF they make it interact with the cruise control OK, but anything more is a dangerous intrusion and as Alastair has said, is a sure way of encouraging tailgating and frustration.

Tarka has none of this nonsense and as the rules cannot be retrospective I see new car sales falling further.

Essentially it is a first step in pushing acceptance of autonomous cars on the population. Brussels also wanted cars to have a breathalyser built in. That will be fun.

While I have a tiny bit of sympathy for the breathalyser idea, the cynic in me has to ask about the ongoing calibration and maintenance of the system. I can foresee once a car is three or four years old there will be stone cold sober drivers locked out of their cars for no good reason while die hard drunks will have sorted out a workaround and will be able to continue driving as badly as they always have.

Calum the technology for this already exists in the various disposable units available for purchase today. Mind you I would full expect that the simple cheap disposable parts you could use will suddenly become a custom item and cost an arm and a leg from the dealer!

I feel quietly confident that performance cars will have a “track” or “sport plus” setting, no doubt with a caveat that it’s illegal to use said setting on a public road.....

Being a confirmed elderly cynic, I can't help feeling that systems capable of reading speed limit signs to control the engine will soon be adapted by both police and criminals to render target cars immobile, perhaps by sending a false signal that the speed limit is zero. It would also be easy to then immobilise any so-called override on the accelerator pedal. Big Brother will not only be watching you - he will stop you getting away.

The risk you are identifying represent one that has me most worried given my background in web stuff. The level of security that needs to be applied to these whilst they communicate with the street furniture, other vehicles, authorities, banks, drones, RF dead-zones, jammers, defective cars, random garbage in the field of movement, birds, puddles, lightening etc etc. I am not yet confident.

I don't feel the car industry has yet to grow a pair on technical security and the poor situation with keyless-go among other things demonstrates this. They have known about it for years but nothing has been done and the same problems are still shipping now.

I am certain they will climb on top of it but I have yet to see them taking part in the industry forums I would expect them to be involved in.

The only person taking the keys to the Coupe off me will be the Her Majesty's Pointy Hats or my family. Then I hope to hail a Zanussi Mobility device in conjunction with Uber and Barclays when needed and pay by the minute. In between is going to be interesting.
