Extra signs mean more obstacles to crash into,= more injury.

I am reminded of the old Sly & Wesley film Demolition Man. Someone swears and a box on the wall makes an alarm noise and spits out an on-the-spot fine. https://youtu.be/Kb21_qI90pE?t=11 Only a matter of time before the Tesla screen gets this action!

I suspect that the reality is that you would need very 'smart' roads everywhere rather than car located technology for full autonomy and the costs would simply preclude such a move. There will be middle course somewhere that will still require drivers to make their own decisions away from key routes or centres of population but I hope that I am not eating my words before I contemplate selling the Mog!

A few years ago someone nicked a lot of the metal road signs in our area. I don't know if the replacements are now plastic but there is still the possibility of signs being knocked down by errant drivers or vandalised so absolute reliance on them would be questionable. . A lot of the plates are glasfibre, beats the scrap collectors.

Years ago I read a sci-fi novel that had vehicles using autonomous mode within city limits and on motorways. It was illegal to turn off the autonomous mode when within these designated areas.
I suspect that will be the first and most likely development. A case of fiction becoming reality, like Dick Tracy's radio wristwatch.

The more I think about this the more I like it - in the family snotter.
For a start the family car ( C200 diesel) is so sluggish tjat overtaking is a rarity as is vigorous driving. But I do find that since the police / local authorities started messing around with the old standard speed limits ( 70 dual, 60 main, 30 built up) and put on limits that bear no relationship to the roads or building or anything much else, I rarely am sure what the speed limit it. And it doesnt help that there are so many road signs you dont register many of them. So something like my sat nav that beeps when I go over the limit is really quite handy.
Lets face it, most driving is in traffic queues, with minds on anything else, drifting along with the flow.
For anyone who doesnt like the idea I am sure that Ebay will be full or adverts for small 12v GPS jammers to disable the system in your car. If putting some baking foil over the aerial doesnt work anyway.
Fascinated to read all about the facilities you rich peopole already have on modern cars . Our most modern vehicle is 2009 and it doesne ven have built in sat nav never mind adaptive crusie control. I didnt realise the latter had hit the streets already.

I struggle to see how it can be universally adopted across the entire network. At current levels of technological maturity I'd certainly agree, but let's not forget how fast technology advances. 20 years ago my mobile phone could only make telephone calls, send SMS text messages, and play Snake.

Those were the days. You could leave the charger at home and still have battery to spare on a 3 day business trip.

Not if you had my boss! Even on a cast iron Nokia he could talk the battery to death in 1-2 days!

Good grief! 2 days would have been luxury. My first mobile phone cost a month's income, weighed about 3kg when removed from the car and plugged into its portable battery pack (which included a wired handset like a conventional phone), had about 1 hour of talk time and 6 hours of standby. When the book sized electronics pack was plugged into its underseat holder it did, however, have hands free capability but naturally no voice control for dialing, there was a point that the handset could be plugged in for that and when the handset was in its holder the in car Mike and speakers functioned.
