if you are unable to find an exact replacement (which I suspect will be the case i'm afraid),would it be possible to use the front of the old switch over a new, working switch...?

I guess it depends on how 'dead' the old one is?

A bit of a faff to canabalise the old switch - but perhaps worth it for the aesthetics.....

James

Ok, not the same, but if the dimensions work, you might be able to replace all three to match.... eBay fog switch

All possibilities guys. Will also investigate any electronics firms in the area who may be able to salvage the existing switch. Will drop Holztechnik a line as well on the off chance they have something. The front with a new back is also a good possibility.

Hope this isn't the first of the electrical gremlins as she's just refused to start a good few times with lots of clicking and a lot of whirring from the back but no turnover! I sometimes wonder if I was mad taking this on but then I drive her and remember why I did!

Thanks for that Stefan. Having a look but can't see anything obvious. Do you mean they have the rear part of the switch or the whole thing including the foglight symbol?

Kevin don't forget that it is not a young car, they just tend to be in good condition and so you forget they are approaching 20 years old.

The click is a very well documented issue. It can be a couple of things. The click is the relay throwing the high voltage element to rotate the starter, but no shove occurs most of the time. Most of us have had it.

1. Battery on the way out and not generating enough umph on the high current side. New battery. Cured if you add a jump cable or twin up a battery.
2. Poor earth/ground for battery/starter motor assembly due to corrosion. I believe the cable to ground for the high current side of the starter motor is in a bit of a dirt/water trap and can oxidise. This leads to poor ground, no current, no turn. Pull the cables and give them a good clean and layer of protection once re-assembled.

Maybe try no.2 first if the battery looks in good fettle.

Do you have a picture of the switch outside the dashboard etc for shape. RS do have quite a few. Maybe some can interchange the button with the existing one ?

Kevin, thanks for the photo, I can confirm they are the same as used on the 3.0L Roadsters, and perhaps some other trads from around 2004 on

If you ring round the dealers you should track one down off a Trad

They are still made, I have the huge Mfr catalogue in my tech library at home & will look up the ref for you tonight, but I'm confident you should get one via a dealer (perhaps mentioning Aero is putting them off)

Finally, if you can get the correct body, but the symbol is wrong there is a way to ping it apart & swop

Ps, if you look at my Avatar photo, you can see a row of S1 Roadster ones

Thanks for that Jon. Have informed my dealer and they are doing some digging on that. Hoping to have one for the car going in for an ever expanding list of work.

I do appreciate the car is 19 years old Alistair and was expecting to have to do work but just not as much as I've had to do in my 7 months of ownership. Would be ok if I was more able to do work myself but don't have the space or the skill levels unfortunately.

Still wouldn't swap it for anything other than an s5 though!
