Hello all fellow Morganeers ...

Maybe someone can advise me out a a insurance catch 22 that I find myself in.

I have purchased a new Morgan.
It will be waiting for me at Richard Thorne Classic cars in a couple of weeks.

I live in Switzerland and would like to come over to the UK to pick up my car, drive it round for a week or so, take it back to the the dealer for a service and then drive back to Switzerland.

I didn't realize how complicated this would be.

I need to get VIN number insurance which doesn't appear to be a problem, which will then allow the DVLA to issue me with export plates.

It just seems that no insurer will insure a non British resident.
I've tried a few.

Do any of you clever people know a way round this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Ah,
Can't help you with this but it reminds me that, back in the late 1970's, Peter Morgan told me I could not take delivery of a left hand drive Plus 8 to register in Switzerland because the Rover V8 engine was not able to be homologated in Switzerland for emissions reasons (even back then!). Had to endure three years among all the deadbeats at the Palais des Nations with a 911 cabrio.

Hi,
If it's only insurance for a week or so while you run it in, couldn't Richard Thorne cover you with their insurance for a small fee?

My French insurer will cover me in England until I get the Plus Four Home. He did it for the Roadster for two months. Jranne d'Arc Assurance with Generali.

So I tried with AXA here in Geneva and they told me they only insure Swiss registered cars...

You would have to check this out but here in the UK we can buy insurance and have 14 days to cool off. That means we can cancel our years insurance within 14 days of purchase and they will refund 96% of your money minus an additional small admin fee(usually about £30).
You maybe able to buy a full years insurance here and then change your mind and apply for the refund?
You must do that within 14 days though.
could that work for you?

Just re-read your question and no I guess it wouldn't as you would still be a non British resisdent :-(

Have you contacted an agency or someone like Gott & Wynne. As Morgan specialists they may be able to access policies that have been used for something like this before? https://www.gottandwynne.co.uk/

Many new cars (Audi, MB) now come with a short term gap insurance to allow you to sort out your own cover so they must exist. Perhaps it might be worth mentioning to Morgan that they would benefit from having this, even as a costed option to enable it?

Short Term Insurance is also an option and offered by companies.

However I don't know if this will be offered to non-UK resident?

In the past I used A-Plan in High Wycombe for specialist car insurance and they had access to many different policies? https://www.aplan.co.uk/high-wycombe

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Why can't your insurer in Switzerland that you will insure the car with if you were exporting it straight away cover you for driving in the UK?
