My 4/4 with a 1.8 Duratec engine started playing up this morning caughing and sputtering after stopping to get some fuel the engine management light came on but the car quickly sorted itself out. On investigation i came up with the error code PO403 (exhaust gas recirculation control unit)
Any suggestions on resolving the problem greatfully received Chris

Chris, they have been known to 'soot up' with carbon deposits, if you're confident enough you can remove the unit and give it a bit of a manual decoke.
Or try some EGR fuel additive in the tank & give it an Italian tune-up

Tried Wynns egr cleaner and reset the error code unfortunatly the problem remains although it hasn't triggered a error code.
I am debating about removing the valve myself but it looks in a pretty inaccessible location or using a local garage l trust.

Oven cleaner works well, just avoid any rubber bits.

I beleave po403 could imply the solenoid is open circuit. A long shot and perhaps you have already tried it but you could try making and breaking the connector a few times? It could just possibly be a dirty connector. Make sure the ignition is off first.

Got to the bottom of the problem SPARK PLUGS severely corroded no doubt to water laying in the depression on top of the engine. The engine fault code was a red herring, must find a cover.
