The later part of the programme brought home the human cost and the way the 40,000 to 50,000 lost air crew were some how pushed out of the collective memory.

For my 70th Birthday I booked an hour flying a Boeing at the centre in Chudleigh (Devon) (https://www.virtualjetcentre.co.uk). I learned to fly before I could drive - my Dad was an RAF pilot so we grew up with planes hanging all over our bedrooms.

I would recommend the experience to anyone - it's spookily realistic and I came away with the thought that planes are way ahead of cars in terms of automation, and we shouldn't be afraid of it. I flew from Gatwick to Berlin and then through the Alps at low level!!
