Late last year I lashed out on a set of G56 exhausts, after hearing one in the flesh and reading the excellent reports they receive. Not cheap but at that price I was expecting faultless performance.
On fitting I immediately heard a tapping noise from the right hand one - sounds like a toffee hammer tapping the pipe in time to the engine firing ( Offside pipe in the UK ).
Comms with G56 has been easy and frank, but I am not totally buying the story I am being told. Initially I was told a small number of those sold do this and the same fault had been reported back to them , and they settle down after putting a few miles on. It was explained these exhausts have a sliding expansion joint between baffle and barrel where movement and noise can occur.
500 miles later it is still tapping away so I recently contacted them again. The story now is its the right hand exhaust valve shutting , the noise transmitting down the tube. On their test car ( which also exhibits this issue ) they swapped the exhausts left for right , and the noise persisted on the right. On my car I swapped the right one for my old Morgan sports exhaust - and I cant hear the tapping , but they say the tapping is being masked by a different exhaust note.
The exhausts themselves sounds great and I am pleased with them except for this one aspect, and as it is noise which is produced by moving parts not designed to move this frequently ( expansion due to heat as opposed to pressure on each stroke) I am concerned wear well eventually occur which will inevitably result in failure.
So - I feel at a bit of an impasse and would welcome input on this. Have any other owners of G56 pipes on TM had this issue? If so what was the remedy ?
Thanks Graham

Hi I recently fitted G56 exhausts and have exactly the same tapping. Not really annoying just there in the background I was told the same so I am putting some miles on to see if it reduces. Apart from that they are a brilliant upgrade. Paul

If its an exhaust valve noise it would be at rpm/2 so at idle 1200 rpm = 10 taps a second...

You would think if it were a valve noise... you would hear that noise from both sides, albeit more pronounced on the side in which the driver sits. Why would it only be the right sided exhaust valve?

It is not a rattle but a clean distinct tap or ting sound perfectly in time with the exhaust pulse at that side. It can be clearly heard even when stood on the other side of the car , the other side just having the expected exhaust rumble.

Graham yep the right hand one.. However I've just been for a drive round the block and I cant detect it now. I've done nearly 2k miles with them so maybe I just got used to it and didn't notice it going? Though not sure if it will appear when the exhausts are really hot after a long run at the moment. Paul

On fitting I immediately heard a tapping noise from the right hand one - sounds like a toffee hammer tapping the pipe in time to the engine firing ( Offside pipe in the UK ). Now you come to mention it, I have the same metallic type noise from my right hand G56 pipe. I always assumed it was noise being transmitted direct from the engine. Can't say that it bothers me too much but it would be interesting to understand it better.

From your description, it sounds like it could be a loose baffle or perforated tube within the exhaust. As the exhaust pulse travels down the pipework it’s moving an internal component & the manufacturers comment that it will go away with time sounds like they are “hoping” a carbon build up will mask/ hide the source of the noise . Try insisting on an exchange exhaust pipe .
