Not sure if this should go in the 'maintenance' section... (mods, feel free to move it if you think so!)

I am wanting to self install one of Cain's instrument surrounds... too long a wait at AW's etc!

Has anyone done this and if so, could they provide me with a 'noddies guide' please! I think I have worked out how to remove the dash...? but especially want to know how to remove the heater and fan control knobs which I gather have some weird fastening system?

Pictures always welcome!

Many thanks,

Peter.

Do you really need to remove the dash entirely?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by instrument surrounds. The 80th Anniversary model has brass instrument bezels and I would be surprised if you would want to change those. Perhaps a photo of the instrument surround that you want to fit would help.

In any case to remove the dash you first need remove the screw from the black plastic panel that goes from the under edge of the dash back towards the firewall and also fits the the ash frame in front of the doors. With both doors open, undo first the screw in the centre top of the dash under the padded roll. Take care with the screwdriver as it is easy to slip out of the slot and damage the dash. Then undo the screw on the drivers side, with the steering wheel hard up it will support the dash. Then remove the screw on the passenger side. Place an old blanket or some such to protect leather from any rough edges or corners, and then fully lower the steering wheel and the dash can be laid over to access all the wiring. If you need to remove the wiring it is best to photograph first and label everything.

You can remove a dash by yourself but a bit of help makes the job easier to support one end etc. There are some possible variation on this theme but for the first time this is probably the best method. Once you have arrived at this point everything else should be reasonably obvious.

The only time that I have had to remove the dash entirely was when it was replaced by a completely new design.

Hi Peter,

Thanks very much for your comments.

I have managed to suss it out with a bit of telephone help from AW! Quite straightforward, apart from the usual electrics and numbering everything before removing wires!

I have photographed the process (still underway!) and will post the 'story' later!

Cheers,

Peter.

don't forget to disconnect the battery or take out the fuses.
