Due to repeated bobbin failure , I have had my CE unit hard bolted to the mounting plate for about 4 years with no problem.
I simply substituted the bobbins for bolts, with spacers to make it stand away from the plate surface.

Simple cylinders of aluminium approx half the length of the original bobbin , drilled clearance size for the bolt. I am sure a few washers would achieve the same effect , but be harder to assemble and not be as elegant.

Thank you for the tip! I’ll try this out if and when my bobbins fail. My new rectifier is on now and it was a pain to put on so I’m hoping I won’t have to mess with it again for some time now.

similar problem here now - so I measured the voltage coming from the generator. There we three phases , two of them has around 20Volts against ground, one has 5 V - ist that normal? or do I have an generator issue ?

uups sorry my mistake - it was wrong to measure against ground ...

To verify a 3 phase stator : (phase 1,2,3)

1.) verify that phase 1,2,3 has no connection to ground

2.) verify that 1-2, 2-3, 1-3 has the same resistance (0,04 Ohm in my case)

3.) run the engine, rectifier unplugged and verify that: 1-2, 2-3, 1-3 has the same voltage, in my case around 18V when idling

so my stator is o.k. - seems I need a new rectifier following the hints before - Thanks!

Thono- The harley replacement is your way forward and far more reliable providing the connections are fully home and engaged and the long terminal lead ring is changed at the bulkhead connector end. Do not in line splice - run the full lead with the loom & connect at the bulkhead connector. Easier to change a rectifier than a generator.

The main harley connector is identical to the morgan one. Planenut has the master parts list for your replacement part number.

Hi Mark,

the new harley replacement rectifier is always ordered (69€ ;-) ) Made a testdrive today evening and found that sometimes the old rectifier ist charging - most of time not.

So it seems to be a loose connection ... however I will replace it and everything should be o.k - until the next problem ;-)

Could be a loose connection or poor earth but can also be short circuits along the +ve wire as the insulation breaks up.

Check the 4 pin plug connection is good and not burnt out. The pins have been known to push back and have a high resistance that leads to heat and the plug melting. If the plug and/or socket has melted then the part numbers are in the alternative parts list here:

Check the earth connection. The HD rectifier (74540-01) seems to be far more reliable than the standard CE 601 unit.
