HI , my car failed it's MOT because of the handbrake ( yes one of those handbrakes ) so i am looking for any tip's , advice and such like to get it sorted .

If it's drum reverse slowly and really slap the footbrake on hard as this can kick the self adjusters into life if they are being lazy, this will assist the handbrake into being more effective as a result.
Could just be the shoes are worn too much, easy enough to slip a drum off and take a look.
If it's discs at the rear PaulJ will be the man to answer this one.

“One of those handbrakes” says to me it might be an ARP4 which I seem to recall had handbrake issues from new? If so, advice may be along soon as certain procedures or mods were necessary.
Apart from that, could it just be that the cable has stretched? Apply the handbrake and check if there is any gap remaining in the handbrake slot on the gearbox tunnel. If the lever is hard up against the slot and you can’t squeeze a small finger in, you can easily take up some slack by adjusting the cable at the rear, beneath the tool tray. Handbrake cables are also well known to seize and break where the flexible outer covering breaks away and lets water in. Typically on tight curves where it turns down to approach the rear wheels. I wrap mine with Denso as a precaution.

HI , it's a 1985 4/4 , drum rear brakes . More often than not the hand brake lever fails to engage .

In that case, it sounds like the pawl at the bottom of the hand brake is not engaging with the toothed quadrant, usually due to wear.
Gearbox tunnel off job I'm afraid.
If the wear is not too bad, you could have tidy up the teeth and pawl with a file. However a new quadrant is available from Terry Foxen at GEE
