Today, other than the Italian national holiday, is also the birthday of Alis. While we were at the restaurant we had another visitor using past techology. This time not hot air but steam.

The Concordia is a steam boat on Lake Como. It was constructed in 1926. The dimensions are: 54 metres long and beam of 12.5 metres at the paddles.

Great pictures - our paddle steamer just predates yours down here on the Dart Kingswear Castle

Last weeks French Morgan team on tour loved it.

Reminds me of the Waverley.

We went to the Isles of Scilly on the Waverley about 30 years ago when the Scillonian broke down mid season, a lovely old thing but not a good sea boat we got the helicopter back.

We went on a trip on the Waverley, from Ilfracombe to The Isle of Lundy in 2009.
Great trip even allowed down in the engine room while under power 👍

Great to see Peter.

I remember in the late 60's travelling regularly between Grimsby and Hull on the Humber paddle steamers Lincoln, Wingfield and Tattershall Castle. They were ideally suited to coping with the shallow shifting sandbanks of the estuary. Always took the time to view the engines working and attendant polished brass.

They carried cars, light commercials and passengers on a regular service between Hull and the pier at New Holland where a train service to the pier end allowed passengers direct access from the boats.

The building of the Humber bridge was the demise of the service.

Birthday wishes to Alis if it's not too late.

Was it a walking beam engine? Steam engines are a thing of beauty with all the exposed moving parts.

I was with the French Group and delighted when I realised that The Kingswear Castle was starting its tourist cruises that day. The group all agreed to me suggestion for a trip. It was particularly poignant for me as I had chartered her a few times when she was based in Chatham (the first time in connection with MOG 2000). In 2012 I arranged for two charters as part of MOG13 - but at the end of 2012 learnt that she was moving to Dartmouth.

She is the only coal fired paddle steamer in the UK - possible one of very few left in Europe - though the oldest paddle steamer in the World is the Danish Hjejlen still powered by its original engine from 1861.

If any TM'er is in the Dartmouth area I strongly recommend they take a trip on Kingswear Castle.
