With the continuing taxation changes to petrol and diesel vehicles and the seemingly single answer of electric vehicle development is this the right way to go , are they really going to be enviromently friendly , what will happen to the batteries when they are scrapped ?

Nobody will worry about that until its too late. Its about making money now.

Who will buy a ten year old electric car? Just saying.

Producing the electrickery for electric vehicles is quite polluting - but this gets overlooked. 278g of carbons per kWh and 2.5 miles per kW. Not exactly green. The batteries themselves are full of heavy metals and other interesting non-recyclable chemicals - lithium iron phosphates, lithium titanate.... made in Beijing, Xiamen and other far flung places and then shipped around the planet.

EV batteries aren't being scrapped at the moment, when they reach end of life for vehicular use they are being repurposed into large battery arrays to store energy from solar arrays.

Is it the right way to go on a long-term basis? maybe not, but we have a short-term (20 year) horizon to get emissions under control. EVs can buy us enough time to get an alternative in place if we can survive long enough, but some scientists reckon it's already too late and it looks like game over by 2050

Only if you use crap power plants, nukes and renewables are nowhere near that. Plus of course making petrol consumes a cartload of electricity - as much as 6KWh per gallon - which is why we won't overload the grid by switching to EVs, we already use comparable amounts of electricity to make gasoline.

For the last week I have powered my house night and day and charged the Tesla without taking any power from the Grid.

36 panel solar array and 3 Tesla Powerwall's to store unused solar for night time power and charging of car

It sounds very much like Shooter is the only one prepared for the new world in this parish, thanks for that encouraging input.
