Quite right. I've never been attracted to the sorts of cars that were objectively the best in their category. I've always been drawn to the (to me) more interesting options that sat just off centre of the obvious choice.

'90 VW Polo G40 (when the Golf MK2 16v was the hot hatch king)
'94 Audi RS2 (why have a quattro when you can have an estate?)
'97 Porsche 911 turbo (when £90k could have bought a F355)

Then along came the family...

Nowadays, the cars that trigger my desire are still not everyone's cup of tea. I may be alone in thinking the Alfa MiTo the prettiest hatch of the last 10 years and I also love the Honda CRZ - both discontinued, unloved and cheap! Trying to find a late model CRZ with the uprated engine/battery and a black interior. Thank God we all like different things.

A wow factor regarding the engine was for me also the Honda S2000 which I had from 2002 to 2005 before I purchased my first Mog.

So ignoring supercars, have there been any Wow! car launches in the last few years?

I can't think of any.........

What does Wow mean exactly , as we all have very individual assessments of cars and then practicality creeps in big time - boot space , people space which then makes car design conform to people carriers/SUV's which now predominate !

I think Wow simply means that it's a car you really want to own. It doesn't have to be a class leader in anything, just to give that vibe.

With the money I would have bought a new Dolomite Sprint, or a Lotus Europa at the time...………..

I had a rental Golf MkIV early in production...….it Wowed me......yeah I know, and when I could afford one, we got a new one, and it was a fantastic car over ten years ownership...……

That sort of thing...…...

A new plus 8 is well within the Wow factor , the downside is keeping luggage dry on the rack if /when it rains ! So then the alternative is a car with a boot which is as exciting ...

The F Type Jaguar is pretty good but for me, the only car that rocked my boat was the Spyker C8. I have never seen one in the flesh but what a beautiful car full of bespoke details.

Not the TR7 Stewart....go and lie down in a dark room. Where they designed it.

I don`t like many modern cars, but I like the Mazda MX5 RF.

Ford GT40 wonderfully impractical but gorgeous. The continuation models are supposed to be a little more practical.

If I were limited to choosing one it would be the GT40 by a country mile.
