Good evening all,
I'm struggling to remove a rear wheel axle castelated nut from my 1996 4/4 and wondered if anyone knew what size of socket it requires?
I've acquired a few that don't fit inside the axle tube, and several that are too small, but what size is it???
Wondered if anyone knew.
Many thanks
Sheridan

On the later cars it's One & 3/16".
Worth trying?

Now to try and find one in this metric land.... I'm sure a 30mm socket will do

You can get imperial (AF and Whitworth) sockets at any decent engineers merchants.
Remember that you are dealing with a nut that has been tightened to one hell of a torque so a properly fitting socket is essential.
Using a metric socket on an imperial nut smacks of bodging to me!

Sheridan, assuming you are removing the nut to perhaps take off the Hubs, be aware that especially on the splined version they can be particularly difficult to pull, as MMC assemble them 'dry' so the tapers 'twixt hub & halfshaft eventually bond to each other

Thank you all!
Actually I was trying to find out why there was slight wheel wobble, and discovered that the wheel nut was loose!!! and that the split pin had been forced into the nearest castelation by backing the nut off.... I needed the right socket so I could forced the pin out, which I've now done, as a 33mm just about did the job. Why had they done that though... because the washer was so thick that the nut didn't do up fully, and the castelations were out of line with the pin holes to feed the pin in through. So now I have much more work as its obvious the bearing must be wrongly inserted or the spline damaged. Ugh!

Arwyn 1 3/16" is equivalent to 30.1mm that's 0.004" difference. do own sockets that are that precise ? No it's not a bodge, you could quite safely use a 32mm socket on a 1 1/4" nut (31.75mm)
