So I think the Clutch Master Cylinder for my 1995 +8 is on its way out - It is leaving embarrassing fluids on the garage floor (via the footwell). I have been looking at a replacement but have minimal info. From the fitted part I can read "Girling .75A". Does anyone have experience or advice.

I know your car is a wee bit earlier, but on the 1999 +4 I used to own the clutch master cylinder was a Land Rover part. I had similar problems to you, but in the end I fitted a service kit, which replaced all the seals etc., rather than replacing the complete cylinder. It was cheaper, too.

I've since moved on to a Roadster and let the buyer of my +4 have all the servicing and maintenance records, along with all the receipts, so unfortunately I can't give you the part number of the repair kit, but I remember getting it from Britparts ( www.britpart.com ).
I seem to recall just giving them the serial number stamped on the cylinder and they could supply the parts to fit from that.
Maybe worth a try, anyway.

I bought what looked like a replica part from Amazon. It had the same bore and dimensions, and looked as though the threads were the same - They weren't but as it was the same bore I thought I would try putting the piston from the new part into the old housing. It fitted really nicely. I bolted it all back in to the car and tried to bleed the system but don't seem to be having much success yet. When the pedal is pushed air is coming out of the slave cylinder bleed nipple but when it is released it seems as though air is getting in somewhere (I close the nipple before releasing the pedal). I'll take it all apart again tomorrow and see if I can find out what is wrong.

Just to finally conclude my learning experience.
I couldn't get any of the combinations of internals and externals to work. In hind-site it was obvious.
so I ordered a set of seal kits from Melvyn.
fitted the kit and reassembled the whole system with no further issues.

another option may have been to get new pipes made up to go between the new master and slave cylinders but I didn't have time for that.

Two days later my throttle cable snapped. I couldn't find the right one locally so another call to Melvyn. replacement Fitted within thirty minutes of arrival.

It goes to show that its a lot easier to use the correct parts that try to be clever.
