Going completely against my parsimonous nature.....

I've found a box of 9 new old stock Gordon Chrome Vanadium sockets in my shed. 1.250 AF and 1/2" drive

A left over from the days when I used to buy and sell high quality tooling.

These are NEW OLD STOCK and have never been used

Hi, I am trying to remove the castleated nut from the rear of my 2009 plus 4 and I am not sure of the exact size . By using a pair of long nose pliers it looks like 1 3/8 " 35mm . Could anyone confirm this , so that I can buy a new socket. I have loads of sockets but none this size .

Hi i removed the front castle nut and its 31mm , it came off easy . the rear nut I cant get off at the moment but at least I know the size of it . Using a pair of pliers wasnt very accurate

If you use MODERN sockets, they are „flangedrive“ an usable an metric and imperial nuts with some care.

Older sockets are setting at the edges of a nut. That is a very small and difficult point. Modern sockets hat grip at the flange where much more power can work.

Have just changed the seals on my 1999 +8 BTR Axle. The nut size is 3/4" BSW and the tread form is UNF .

I am trying to get the size of the rear hub nut on my 2009+4, did you get anywhere with 31mm? we think mine is 33mm as a 32mm socket would not go on 33mm is equivalent to 7/8" UNF

If it‘s 31 or 33mm it isn‘t metric.

From 28mm on there only sizes with 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 ending. So if you look for such a socket it would be imperial.

Sometimes (at classic MINIs) there where nuts for imperial threats for to use with metric tools on the aftermarket.
If you‘re between 31 and 33mm I think it‘s 1 1/4, but than a 32mm would fit. If you’re more at 33mm it looks like 1 5/16.

The socket I use is 1&5/16 inch AF & as Rene says you can get them from classic Mini parts suppliers as they fit the steering wheel boss nut

BTR axle hub nut socket size is 1&5/16" AF, 3/4 W or, 33mm confirmed by Melvyn :-)

As told 31mm and 33mm aren‘t usual metric spannersizes. This spanners and sockets are the result of the forgotten knowledge of the imperial sizes. If you hab a look in a metric spanner or socketset, there are no 29, 31 or 33 sockets.

This sizes are styled to match imperial nuts. If you‘ve got a nut and the the 30mm and the 32mm wouldn‘t fit, you measure it.
And how? Metric, or when imperial never you measure 1 5/16… With the relativ new technic of flangedrive spanners and sockets,
Doesn‘t matter if the Tool (or the nut) doesn‘t fit 100%.

I think it would be worth to keep the imperial sizes! Not only the fizz in the pint bottle.
