Just been checking my Sanef (Emovis) Toll Tag bill from our recent French trip, as I was a bit surprised by 30.90 euros on one particular day

Most days ranged between 2.10 to max 8.60 (to go over the Millau Viaduct & well worth it)

After back-checking or route taken that day it was from Chartre sur le Loir north to Montreuil. turns out the only bit of motorway we did was the A28 skirting Le Mans and up through Rouen only 120 odd miles, the rest on D roads

So be aware the operator of this stretch (Alis?) seams to charge an inflated rate, as according to Sanef in Harrogate the charge of 30.90 is correct

That's a lot of cash for tolls scared
Combined with the high French fuel costs, and speed humps etc in small french villages if you take the back roads, sadly it is just another thing to take the edge off enjoyable motoring...

We’ve recently returned from France. (Montlhery and then Loire Atlantique, then Brittany) we chose to do two days involving the Peage. The first just a few euros from Chartre to Paris, but after leaving Paris, the long haul from Paris to Clisson (south of Nantes). The latter cost about 30 euros for about 260 miles. We considered it money well spent. The roads were excellent and that journey, avoiding tolls would have been just too much for us in one day.
In the great scheme of things; fuel and tolls were a relatively small part of the overall cost of an epic holiday.

Hi,
I do a lot of driving in France and when I have time I prefer to use the local roads and take in the sights.
That said, the French Motorway system is worth every Euro in my opinion, they have good surfaces, are quiet and therefore safe and the service areas plentiful, clean and pleasant to visit. When i am in a hurry or have large mileages to cover they offer good value for money.
We could learn a lot from them!

That's expensive.... I will be on this stretch of road next week - I can't avoid it as I won't have time in hand to do so.

Interesting postscript to this.
I have just had my Amex bill covering the period of my trip to France.
Their currency conversion rate was 1.142 euros to £1.
I was pleasantly surprised.

I agree. I'd rather pay a toll to drive on a well maintained and relatively uncrowded Autoroute if I need to get from A to B quickly.

Whats more, the tolls level up the playing field as far as the cost of rail travel goes. Already, rail fares in France aren't as outrageous as they always seem to me in the UK, but for a long journey, when you add the costs of driving (including tolls) it's almost always cheaper to take the train if you're on your own, maybe a bit cheaper in the car if there's two of you.

Thats what I find in the UK. Chaper to use the tain one up than the car and a damn sight pleasanter given the congestion on our roads

we should consider that France has a considerably larger land mass and probably has its industry better distributed than the UK. Many RNs are very busy with traffic avoiding expensive Autoroutes. There are discounts for regular users, but occasionally crossing the country isn't cheap.
I don't see easy solutions for the UK, and the south-east in particular.
