If you get the chance to grab a copy of Junes Flypast magazine and read the account of their truly epic transatlantic voyage do, the raw courage and resilience these guys must have had is truly amazing notworthy clap

If you can't find it I'll scan it in.

I know a few of us are regular readers of it.

I'll never forget watching the "new" Vickers Vimy flying into Goodwood at Revival about 10 years ago on it's final flight it was an incredible looking machine.

Richard I was lucky enough to be there on that day too. Quite remarkable was the scale effect i.e. it is quite a large plane and a slow plane. Scale effect makes it appear to fly even more slowly than it does. I couldn't help but think "Oh, this is just as it would have appeared to viewers in 1919." Quite a moment.

That's good to hear you shared it Kerry, a very special moment. I had never considered the scale factor but really get that feeling it looked like it was about to stall to me.

The replica was forced down in bad weather at my local airfield (Swansea airport ) one of it's last flights. My luck found out days later on the local TV news. Grrr.###

When Heathrow Terminal 3 was opened in 1961(?) there was a model of the Alcock and Brown Vimy suspended from the ceiling on the first floor. I guess it was moved when the Terminal was first extended. I used to see it travelling home to (then) India on school holidays.

Not wishing to detract from or divert attention from Alcock and Brown I, unless I am very mistaken, it was the Vimy replica that was the first plane to land on the new Sydney airport (SYD) runway during our bicentennial in 1988 to officially open it. This commemorated the flight of Ross and Keith Smith, also in 1919 (12 November departure) from England to Australia in a British aircraft. They reached Darwin on 10 December [what would we do without Google?] and claimed the PDS 10k prize.

When I sit and think of it, the pace of advances made in aircraft design and manufacture has been amazing, particularly up to 1969 (50 years ago) with the first flights of the 747 and Concorde.

50 years between Alcock and Brown and those two aircraft !!

Amazing.
