Next door in New Hampshire the "Live Free or Die" state, helmets are not required. It has also been renamed the "Drive Free and Die" state due to the overwhelming abundance of organ donors...

 Anyone want to tell me what the lever off the top strut is for?

Peter had moved his compression release to the strut (looks like a brake lever from a motorcycle). It's usually under the dash but if you're hand cranking from the front you really need the compression release up front. It's not easy to hand-crank the JAP LTOWZ engine since you're turning the camshaft, which is then trying to turn the crank at twice that speed and requiring twice the effort.
