My engine died due to a disintegrated timing belt at 11,174 miles on the odometer. The belt housing was loaded with fibers. Perfect time to do the pulley upgrade. I used an 11/16" combination wrench on the tensioner and tied a small line from the box end to the starboard headlight mount to hold the tension off while changing the belt. I tried to use a jack, but the wrench kept slipping off. Found a IP45 Torx Plus impact wrench for cheaper than a non impact bit, handy. Getting the timing belt aligned was quite a fiddly task requiring multiple restarts before getting it right. I had some nails that measured 3/16" that I cut for dowels for indexing the pulleys. I slacked off the rear intake valve rocker arm to ease positioning the intake (center) pulley. Retorqued to 30 ft-lb when finished. I relied on the witness marks on the belt and the dots on the timing pulleys. I transferred the original washers from under the belt cover screw heads to the new, longer screws in the spacer kit. I hope the air gap will help the new timing belt live longer than the original.

...I don't disagree about the build up of heat inside the case. Even decades ago when Harley did the belt primary they had a vented cover to help reduce the heat on the belt. And that was outside the motor, not inside. Without some type of venting/cooling, I cannot believe these belts last very long on average.

I like the idea of scoops to cover the direct holes and still let air flow through the cover.

Next step... adding a small fan to the crankcase pulley to spead air over the inside of the belt casing? Would need a deeper cover, and maybe a planned air entry / exit point...

Not a deeper cover, just ducting to an entry hose from a fan with filter. The exit holes that are shown with their beautiful covers shown earlier look good to me.
S&S, you should’ve be reading this Thread.

Lots of engines have belts that are exposed to heat and the real heat on an S&S is not the lower front but the top end.

But we also have a MANTRA in the "old Gold Wing" world that goes "Change the Belts!" One of the big risks for engines that have a lot of down time is the belt sits in one position for an extended period. This causes them to have a "set" position. So on my 78 wing which I change out the belts every 5 or 6 years even though I do not put a lot of miles on it during that time.

Well, I finally got bit by this one, April 2014 car. Ironically, I was on my way to the S&S factory for a tour and some Q&A.

Ouch - that's nasty!
It maybe a little late, but the crank/pinion pully upgrade is documented

Well it's a well documented fault, you roll the dice......I hope you could pick up the upgrade parts at S&S easily. That crankshaft bolt seems to has disappeared completely down the road.

Why? This is a well documented issue going back to 2014 and there is an S&S modified bolt kit availible

You even highlighted it in one of your recent posts erroneously billed as a reference to a chassis issue.

This is why so many people are asking you to back off as you are mixing issues and simply posting negative and old info.

If you have something useful, relevent to three wheelers, helpful or supportive fine; but if you want to keep reminding peope of history how about starting a separate topic, maybe in the Malvern Arms then everyone can see.

I ordered a new pulley cover directly from S&S and this is what they sent. I used the correct part number, which was also on the packing list for the part. Good job S&S. I plan to visit them in person in an attempt to get an exchange for the correct cover. Cover cost was $377.US
