We went to see Tom Jones in concert last night in Paris. Amazing evening, great gig. It’s astonishing that his voice is still so brilliant at 79 years old. What’s more, the set was extremely varied, and his old classics had all been tweaked with new arrangements. He had even frenchified a couple of numbers (not unusual & what’s new pussycat) with accordeon accompaniment.

What a showman. I can see why he was such a hit for so long in Vegas.

Not quite so old, but a motoring classic, at least to me: the Peugeot 504 Ute.
Peugeot club day at Prescott today and apart from an early 404 (similar in style to the old Austin Cambridge but a bit smaller) the Ute was the best looking motor on the hill. I'd guess it had been restored as they normally lead a very hard life, but looked as though it had just come out of the showroom.
Unfortunately it had gone by the time I got off the hill, so no photo.

I used to own one. It was called Lester (as in Lester Pickup).

Nice one Giles.

Was only talking about TJ at lunch today with a guy who was a Fleet Street photographer in the '80s. As a rookie he was sent to photograph Tom Jones at the Dorchester, expecting to do a paparazzi shot outside. When he got there, he found it was a staged shot in one of the suites. He had never done one of these and had no lighting etc. Sensing his unease, Tom & his son Mark (who was/is his manager) sat my mate down, made him a cup of tea and said " Leave it to us, we've done this before". They dragged the lamps and furniture around the room to set up the shot, and all Steve had to do was press the shutter.

What a gentleman! Most of the other celebs/politicians/sportspeople he shot were apparently not usually such nice people...

In Kenya we had a knock down kit Peugeot 504 estate as a company car.
I remember the joy on the first filling to discover the petrol hose from the filler wasn't connected to the tank & the crowd of smoking Kenyan's who came to watch with my kids in the car.

But it was raised for the roads and it really went well even off road in the bush.

However despite the Nairobi policeman's conviction it couldn't do 150 mph up hill out of Nairobi ( there was a piece of paper taped on his speed gun) at 5000 ft on Kenyan petrol (RON 80 if your lucky) towards the rift valley. More like 40!

Happy days.

Sorry for the thread drift but my first company car in India was a 504 "Break" which was well suited to local use. Its replacement was a Standard 2000 which was a locally assembled SD1 Series 2 but fitted with the equivalent of a 50's Vanguard Sportsman engine and it was positively the worst car I have ever had! It was replaced by a 505.

Not sure I am following this thread or understand the connection between Tom Jones and Utility trucks?

Anyway from what I do understand is that Tom Jones can still sing magnificently unlike say Elton John or Paul McCartney and that he is a genuinely nice chap!

clap
