Yes that was the idea.... Indeed they are not perfect! Maybe they need to be redone by a pro...

Not sure a pro would fare any better, position of clips is limited by where the gap narrows, if you position the apex of the mesh to the top of the lamp, which it looks like you have ( my rims have a dot at the top) then the mesh will be at an identical angle with each other, I don't have a mesh grill so cant comment but I have fitted 5" spot lamp mesh having made up aluminium clips (only 2 on each lamp) and looks ok to me.

As for cleaning, if you bend over one (bottom ) clip it is possible the unclip the other two and swing down the mesh.

The real issue with the clips is they could do with being a bit longer and just a little narrower.

I set mine on the diagonal to match the grill .....worked for me

To me the grill looks vertical...
