The wheel nuts on my +4 are far too tight to undo using the spanner supplied with the car (and yes I have noted the undo direction arrow). I can only think the hub nut tightens as the wheels turn or the mechanic who fitted the wheels was on steroids. I noticed in the March Miscellany that Ledgerwood advertise a “hub nut remover” so I guess I can’t be the first with this problem, if someone has already gone to the trouble of making a “special tool” for the job. However, before doing something stupid like lashing out £93.00 for the tool and a further £17.50 for the knuckle bar, has anyone any similar experience with tight nuts they might like to pass on. My wife has suggested the use of boxers but to no avail. If I do manage to get the blessed things undone, are there any recommendations for re-installation, perhaps the use of an anti-seize compound?

Try gently heating them. A hairdryer should do it. A smear of LM grease on your nuts should prevent any re-occurrence. Ooer missus!

I have the Ledgerwood tool and it works amazingly well. The nuts undo surprisingly easily. I have no connection with Ledgerwoods, other than it being my nearest Dealer..............

I always use copper grease to prevent seized nuts. There is also special "seize stop" grease which is stable over extreme temperatures. I also have the hub nut remover and a long arm.

There are other suppliers of hub nut spanners. Millers Commercial Vehicles do one. Cerealsurfer will know exaclty where the link is on this forum! The MG Owners Club also has a source.
Both are considerably lower in price than Ledgerwoods.

I've mackled-up my own budget spanner - at zero cost, thanks to a friendly local workshop who let me have a 4ft length of 1 inch square section tubing. (I think B&Q may also sell it if you can't get hold of it anywhere else). It was then just a case of drilling a couple of 8mm holes in the original spanner, cutting a 6 inch length of tubing to give adequate clearance, drilling through both sections of tubing, and then bolting them all together. (I bought a replacement spanner from the MGB Hive near Wisbech - for approx £5.50 - to keep in the car for emergencies). It may not be pretty, but it certainly does the job - and it was dirt cheap!

Many thanks one and all for your replies. I bodged up a tool (very similar to the Ledgerwood device), put a 2 foot knuckle bar on it and put a trolley jack under the handle. Then put enough tension on the jack for the tension on the bar to get scary then bashed the tool with a club hammer and …. the blessed thing moved. Had that not worked it was going to be out with the heat gun. If anyone is interested I am proud to tell you my nuts come greased. The question now is … how tight do I do them up? No one told me owning a Morgan was going to be this testing. What fun.

Bang them tight and after 50 miles do it again. GoMog suggests more! http://www.gomog.com/allmorgan25.html

The question now is … how tight do I do them up? It doesn't really matter as Rudge hubs tighten themselves (at least in theory). That said I have always tightened them as tight as I can and found that the standard spanner and hammer kit works well enough. Copper-ease on the tapers deals with the removal issues.
