I tend to turn on the key, then put on the seatbelt and make myself comfortable by which time all the clicking and wheezing has stopped(from the car- not me!) - then I start the engine - I have no problems when I do this.

ECU - a compute- needs time to boot up correctly. Starting the engine before this is complete can lead to all sorts of errors.

Hmm... well that didnt work. Did the same thing again today ... switch ignition on, wait for red light to go out and in that time the rev counter trembles at zero (with a rapid clicking noise) the thwacks to full deflection. Switching off and it drops to the red line. Switch back on and it drops to zero. Not every time of course as that would be too easy. Time to get an obd11 reader I think to see if it is a sender?
Incidentally it has always randomly stuck at the idle rpm on switch off, so it's always been a bit badly behaved.

Agree with Cooperman. The first time I ever removed my dash, several multiplugs fell off due to the loom being bundled up and wiring tight. So, worth popping dash off and remove/re-insert connector blocks.

My speedo does this, it takes a while for it to settle down, must try the delayed start trick. I have a Omex ecu in so this could also be the issue. The Omex ECU seems to be ready instantly however the instruments are driven by the original ECU. In any case the digital instruments need a moment to self zero. Wait until the hands sweep over an back to zero before starting otherwise the zero point will be set at the position the needle is at when you start the car. If the tacho is at 3,000 RPM, for example, it will show 4,000 rpm at idle when the engine is running. To resolve turn the ignition off, wait a moment, turn on again and wait for the instruments to zero before starting the car.
