I apologize for asking a stupid question but my curiosity has gotten the best of me. I don't see the answer anywhere.
What does the emoji face next to our forum name mean. It varies from a yellow happy face to gray indifferent face. How do these change and why?

Hold the cursor over the emoji and click and all will be revealed.

Rodger, I don't change mine. It changes on its own.
When I place the cursor over the emoji it says, " online content "and when I click nothing happens. So now I'm feeling stupid.

OK, I see there are two locations where the emoji appears. The one I was referring to is at the top of the page, right hand side next to your username and the envelope.

Ok, both my emoji faces next to my name above changed from yellow happy when the tread started to gray expressionless now. I didn't change it. That's what I'm asking about.
Edit.
I soon as I edited and resubmitted it changed back to a happy face. Perhaps related to submitting a response.

Its grey and expressionless when you're offline. Repost or resubmit etc. and it changes back
