I have just bought a 1984 4/4 which has Engine Oil Lube Lines connected to the Front Suspension Bushes--- the Lines are pressurised using a 3 way valve operated by foot from inside the car. I was advised not to use the valve as it sometimes sticks open and empties the sump contents all over the car. I have been advised to convert this system to grease nipples located under the bonnet and also to fit leather gaiters to the kingpin assemblies, Can anyone please advise where I can obtain the conversion kit, and whether I could fit it myself or get a dealer to fit it ? If cerealsurfer reads this, I bought the car via your parents, your Mother told me about this website which I find fascinating

Hi Greenmorgan Welcome - if you check under Servicing and Maintenance of Classics you will find your topics well and truly documented. To the extent that DaveW Roadster Guru's wife will procure gaiters with a little negotiation if memory serves me well. Enjoy your (S)miles Richard

Welcome! As Richard says, searching this site will provide answers to all the questions you raised above - and a lot more besides! Enjoy the car Cheers,

Greenmorgan, Have a look at the link below. However your Kingpins may not be compatible with Grease as a lubricant. This has been highlighted by some of our US brethren as they say that the grease will not exit the kingpin in the region of the top bushing. I would advise consulting one of the Morgan dealers that advertise in Miscellany http://www.talkmorgan.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/49632#Post49632Cheers

Thanks very much for your prompt and very useful advice. I will investigate further as advised and let you know how I'm getting on Don't forget- if you decide to go for grease nipples, it is also possible to get 'angled' ones, which make using the grease gun quite a bit easier I hunted around for ages until I found a gun that did the job really well- ended up with an Abnox-Wahner which has been excellent G

A quick update on my labours on the remote greasing project. I bought the kit from Harrisons in Jan, and waited until Feb when I went on a Workshop Day at BHM and arranged for them to fit the kit at the same time. However they advised that they could not fit the Male Stud Elbow to the Lower Grease Nipple on the Kingpin, but could not explain how to resolve the problem, so I took the Kit back home, bought a pair of overalls and started to relive my youth by spending Sunday Morning lying contorted under the Morgan. I worked out that by loosening the Shock Absorber, I might just be able to fit a Straight Connector ( as opposed to the Elbow Connector), I also found that the 'One Shot' connections had been disconnected and replaced by remote nipples. So I reordered the required Connections from Harrisons and found that the Straight Connector could just about be fitted with very small clearance from the Shock Absorber. Fitting the rest of the kit was quite straightforward. I then went to Machine Mart to get a Grease Gun, the first one was supposedly able to be filled by spooning in grease from a tub, but I found that the cylinder was too small to allow the grease to enter, so I changed it for a larger type which accepts a 400g cartridge --- this was a massive improvement. I have now injected grease via the 4 new remote nipples and all is OK except that one of the top connections seems blocked and no amount of pressure will make the grease flow. I noticed that the top section of the main springs and kingpins were not lubricated, is this normal? I put lube oil and grease on these top sections as they looked very dry. So I finally got it all sorted out, many thanks to Robbie for sourcing the kit.

There is a sleeve inside the spring covering the upper part of the Kingpin. Could that be the dry bit? (see DaveW' thread on changing the Kingpins). From Dave's notes it appears the the top greasing point could be subject to blockage. Not sure what you do in such cases having never worked on one.

To open up the clogged passage you might try removing the fitting and inserting a thin stiff wire down the grease channel. Sometimes that will break up the jam.

Thanks Phantod --- I removed the connections, tried the wire test and found resistance, I then sprayed in WD40 and rerodded which cleared the blockage, my new grease is Lithium based and less viscous than the old grease so I'm hoping that the problem won't reoccur.
