I have a 1992 4/4 with the 1600 XR3I EFi engine. I have been having problems engaging any gear after starting engine and after checking everything else suspected a faulty clutch but after fitting a new one and setting the clutch cable at the specified free play of 1/10" it still won't go in gear. A search suggested that it has to be set with no free play, and on doing this the gears work but I am not happy at this because it means that the release bearing is running all the time and it's not designed to be like that. Another post suggested it's the bellcrank the clutch pedal operates and says can fail and that the two levers should be at 90° to each other, well I have checked mine and it doesn't appear to have failed as looks ok but the lever's are at about 45° and I can't see any wrong movement in the lever's when the clutch pedal is pressed as it pulls the cable ok. . Can anyone help with some ideas please and possibly confirm either way about the angles of the operating levers. Many thanks.

My comments are based on two crossflow Escorts and a 1970,s crossflow 4/4.
On these cars optimum and recommended setting was for NO free play in clutch cable at bell-housing, as indicated in Haynes manual for Ford Escort.
Whether this is relevant, I must leave others to decide!

I have a 1989 4/4 with CVH. I go with "almost" zero free-play. I can just feel the cable mowing, not totaly locked. On GoMog 4/4 specific 7.03 Clutch Issues, you can read all about the confusing free-play problem. To follow this solved my clutch problems. Best regards/MOGSWE in Sweden

Thanks for the note, I have already seen that, but it still seems wrong, but have to admit the clutch does work with all the free play out of the cable.
