The immobiliser will not drain the battery in a week, my battery is normally connected to a battery conditioner but here have been periods of 2 or 3 weeks when I haven't and the car still starts OK

mine as well. Sits for several weeks and starts every time. I suspect you have a flawed battery

Thank you all for the help in testing my electrical system. I will follow your directions and will report back with my results. Just to be sure.....will one of these meters work for testing the current? This is what I plan to use: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NAVAT9S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I do not have the immobilizer option on my M3W, so no current draw from that. I don't have any other accessories connected to the battery.

Thanks again for the help and advice.

does your M3W have a clock? very small draw, and will not cause what is happening. Once again, I suspect it is your battery

That meter will work fine.

The ECU along with other electrical gubbins will have a small draw but should not discharge the battery in the timeline described

OK, so here's the update....

I used a digital multi meter to measure the current between the car's positive terminal and the battery. After disconnecting the positive leads, and connecting the multimeter in series, once the connection was made the hazard lights started flashing. The multimeter was reading all kinds of numbers, flashing randomly. I disconnected that series connection, and when I went to put the car's positive terminals back on to the positive connection of the battery, the hazard lights started flashing again and now won't shut off!

I disconnected the battery terminals and tried reconnecting them again, and the hazard lights are continuing to flash. The voltage is still reading 13.4 V before starting the car, and the car does indeed start. Once the car is started, the voltage increases to 14.4 V, but the hazard lights will not turn off. Even when moving the hazard lights toggle switch up-and-down, the hazard lights will not shut off.

At this point, I really don't know what to do! I have the battery disconnected from the car. As soon as the battery is reconnected, the hazard lights start flashing and will not shut off.

Any suggestions of what might be happening here??? Help needed!

Did you turn the ignition on when you had the Amp Meter installed? Trying to measure AMPERAGE.

I didn't turn on the ignition when the multimeter was connected. As soon as I made the connection between the positive leads and the battery, the hazard lights started flashing.

I was unable to read the amperage, because the current being sent to the meter kept fluctuating.

polar993 the voltage figures you quoted with engine running are spot on so no issue there. 13.7 volts before starting is high but probably due to being on charge just before - nothing to worry about. For reference typical lead/acid (OE) battery off load would be 12.7 volts fully charged.

Further thoughts. What is the capacity of this battery (measured in amp/hrs)? The fact that it's claimed to deliver 880 cranking amps has no relevance if it's capacity is so small that the immobiliser can drain it in a week!

For reference the factory Banner battery you replaced is a 30 amp/hr one. Although inadequate capacity, my M3W would start with this after 3 weeks despite immobiliser drain. The suggested current drain measurements won't tell you much other than there is some due to immobiliser. It may burn out a perfectly good multi-meter though if you don't know what you are doing, not to mention possibility of shorting battery!

As already suggested the manufacturers should be the best source of answers.
