Can anyone help please?
The car starts OK, but intermittently will suddenly lose half its power. It is as if you have lost 4 cylinders. You also get a strong smell of unburnt fuel. Stop the engine, wait a minute or two, start it again and all is OK. Sometimes this can be within a few miles, sometimes it can be after 100 miles. Have tried swapping most components but so far without luck. Now running out of ideas.

Sounds very electrical. Have you tried a new ignition module? V8 rotor arms are apparently of dubious quality, so I'd try another as a cheap test.
Not much help I know.......

distributors, if same as used by land rover are known weak link, pick brains at Rimmer Bros if desperate

The ignition module actually failed during one of the test drives while trying to sort this problem so it got replaced anyway. Fault still exists. Rotor arm replaced as well (and coil, plug leads and currently trying a borrowed distributor) fault still there.

Have you thought about giving something like Hometune or Cryptontune a go. Hopefully you'll find someone who knows how a proper car works.

A LandRover Dealer or specialist is probably the best bet, but at a price. If it's not electrical it could be over-fuelling which wets the plugs, & causes a multiple misfire. If there's a temperature sensor which detects a cold start - try replacing that? An intermittent fault on a sensor might reset on restarting. If you can find out where it is - disconnect it while the engine is running badly and see what happens.
There was an incident last year with a Plus8 on carbs, and an aftermarket high pressure fuel pump caused a major problem which meant that it just wouldn't run. So excess fuel pressure can cause this. A blockage in the fuel return to the tank might also cause it.

I think maybe you are right about giving LandRover loads of money to look at this, it has been going on for some time now. Have already replaced the temperature sensor. Interesting thought about over-fuelling. Thanks for that and the possible blocked fuel return.
