took a long drive in the Morgan on Monday and found the seats to be somewhat lacking in comfort and that got me thinking about alternative seats.

Mine are non reclining and a bit on the unsupportive side and ideally I'd like something better.

Now I'm not ready to spend £1000 plus on this so I'm wondering if there are any members with experience of alternative seats? I know MX5 seats will fit into MGBs and TRs, BMW, SAAB and ALFA seats will go into Stags.

I'm not averse to a bit of cutting and welding but I would want the end result to look at least reasonable.

Any thoughts, ideas or even better experience welcomed.

Given the simplicity of the old style construction that Mmc still use. I would be confident that the seats could be fitted if there was room. You need to check dimensions

The thing to watch with alternative seats is that the Morgan seat base is narrow, Providing the replacement base is narrow enough, a replacement seat should fit with a bit of tweaking.

I have found no seats from other Marques that will do the job and fit. But I understand Your problem. I sourced a pair of Roadster Seats from Talk Morgan Member.. He found them but they would not fit in His Short Door +8. He sold them to Me. I have a short door body but a long door chassis. Remember I built a Bitsa. By cutting the parcel shelf back a bit I was able to install the Roadster Seats. They are not leather but Vynl. He paid $200US and $200 freight. I paid $400 and $200 freight to My home so $600US.

I know of no inexpensive way to accomplish the seat problem. I was lucky to find this. Or really it found Me. I paid over $2,000US for factory leather seats for My +4-4STR in the year 2000. I have no way of knowing, if you could get them, what they would cost today. My guess is $4,000 US.

Thanks for that. I've been doing a bit of measuring with a very old, uncovered MX5 seat that I've got in the loft and guess what - it's too wide.

So now I'm thinking could I fit the Morgan covers (foams etc) onto the MX5 frame, which tilts and may actually fit? This would even maintain a degree of originality as well.

When I bought my car (in boxes) it did not come with seats. I made a set of seats using plywood, same measurements as original. Didn't find them to be comfortable. As you have done I looked around for a set of seats, more money that I was willing to spend. I found a set of MGB seats, but were about 5" too wide. I cut down the bottoms 5" and the bottom of the back 5". I left the top of the back original. Had the seat pieces welded together. The person doing the upholstery was able make cushions for the bottoms and then custom made the backs to look like clam shells. They seem to fit the car, I may have to put more padding in the bottoms, but useable. They are not original to the car, but I want a car I can drive, not just look at. If you would like I can send you pictures of the process.

Talk to Allon Whites. They can do wonders on the original seats.

John, I believe Allon White will be considerably outside my budget at the moment, around £2500 according to their website.

I like what Jamie has done but that looks expensive too.

Bens method has me wondering if I should have a go at upholstering - I've done that before but would need an industrial sewing machine!


Off to ebay I go...........
